Is Oil Use Normal?
I got my Dodge used about 3 months ago. It's a 2004 5.7 Liter with 54,000 miles on it. Within a few days ofthe purchase, I changed the oil using 7 quarts of Mobil 1 5W30and a Mopar filter.I've been checking theoil every couple hundred miles and noticed itdropping slowly, and now it's down 1/2 quart after 1,500 miles. Should Ibe concerned about this? There isn't a puff of smokeon a cold start. What's going on here?
do you park in the same spot at night? How's the floor look? Did you change it yourself? Look at the drain plug, clean it and around it and then check it a few days later and see if oils leaked out.
Half a quart every 1500 miles shouldn't throw up a red flag, but you might want to find where it's going. When I change my oil (as much as 6000 miles when I use Royal Purple) the level is right where it was on the stick when I filled it. So to answer your question, I'd say no, it's not normal.
That said, I had an '02 Avalanche with the 5.3L V8 that lost half a quart every 1500 miles. Never could find a sign of any leak. Dealer told me on more than one occasion when I questioned it that "All the 5.3s do that", and was completely disinterested...

YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE MISSING OIL. I HAVE A 03 RAM WITH THE 5.7 WITH ABOUT 41,000 MILES ON IT. I DON'T CHECK THE OIL FAITHFULLY, BUT WHEN I DO CHECK BETWEEN OIL CHANGES IT'S ABOUT A 1/2 QT. LOW. SAME THING NOT A SPOT IN THE DRIVEWAY, AND NOT A PUFF OF SMOKE.
it's normal for me too....and you and i use the same oil. someone said it could have to do with it being synthetic oil, it finds places to seep out. i haven't worried about it and probably won't worry about it...everything seems the same since i bought it new...except of course the price to fill it up
I think it has a lot to do with how you drive. Trust me when you get on it you are not looking back for smoke. I have seen it before when someone was in front of me at a stop sign or light and when they gave it a lot of gas just a tad of smoke would come out.
If you do it a lot then it adds up. Oil will slip by the rings in tiny amounts just as tiny amounts of fuel will slip by. Ever smell your oil when you change it. Mine has a little hint of fuel in it.
My last oil change was Sunday. I had Mobil 1 5W20 in it. I had about 9000 miles on the 15000 mile oil. But I did not put in an extended life filter so I wanted to change it out. I put the same back in it. Before the change with the oil cold (sitting all night and all day in MS cold) I was maybe 1/4 quart low. After I changed it and put my 7 quarts back in I was right on the top of the marker.
So my 06 used about 1/4 quart in 9000 miles. But this could have something to do with my low mileage. I have 15,400 miles now. So I put it in at about 6000. My 3000 mile change was just conventional oil. That was just out of Dodge's break-in period. I believe it goes a little longer because I kept getting better MPG until about 10,000 miles. Now it is very consistent on the MPG.
If I remember too I will update what happens in 10-15k miles. But it took me 1 year and 8 months to get 15k on the truck. So it may take awhile.

If your truck runs hot, above the middle of the temp guage, you may also be vaporizing it in the crankcase and sucked through the EGR. A check is free, pull the EGR and see if it is real wet. I'm right at 80K on mine running Amzoil and 7500 between changes and it doesn't loose any. Check the plugs too to see if any show an abnormal wet indication.
