That looks like the recirculate air door. When closed against the grates, it draws in outside air, when open, it draws in cabin air. Was it laying across the blower wheel inlet?

if im thinking about this right my truck had the same problem... however it was for the fresh to recycled air door, behind the glove box, that will work fine you will always have fresh air comming in and not the recycled air which for most people its not a big deal, but when mine was broke they were having the brush fires in san diego and it wasnt a comfortable drive with all the smoke smell lol. but yeah i took the old one out while i was waiting on the dealer to get it ordered and installed, but i got alot better air flow when i got it out.
I had trouble with my air not blowing hard & the fan motor vibrated badly. Finally decided to drop the fan motor located under the glove box. Removed the 2 control wiring plugs, remove the 3 (5/16" , Flat or Phillips head screws), anyone of those will work. Removed the motor & found a piece of hard broken plastic laying in the fan. Looked in the hole & noticed it was blocked by a piece of foam covered plastic. Removed it thru the same hole, the fan goes in. I put everything back together & she is blowing better than ever without any vibration. I came on this site hoping to find out. What does a, A/C Heater Blend Door Actuator, do? Trying to figure out if How important it really is... Tried to upload a photo but It's not working for me.
Anyone considering repairing their heater doors, see this site.

I just took out my recirc door two days ago, again by pulling it out through the blower hole.
I plan on repairing/upgrading this summer using their parts, before winter sets in.
