Default 440cid Engine Swap

I currently have my hands on a 440 and transmission from a '78 New Yorker that I was going to put in a Cuda if I could find one. The Cuda, even for a POS, is getting to be harder and harder to find and if you do find one, it is over priced because of what it is. So, I have an engine and Tranny with nothing but my '04 Ram Quad to put it in. I have been mulling this over in my mind for about a year and think I am going to do it. Does anyone know of another person who has done something similar? If so, do you have some contact information so I can ask some questions? If everything goes right I will also have the 5.7 Hemi and Tranny for sale within a year or so. Also, if anyone has any legitimate concerns about the feasibility of doing this, I would love to hear them. Thanks.

What have you done or plan on doing to the 440 before putting it in? I ask because that 440 is going to be slow unless you build it up. Long before 1978 all engines were destroyed by emmissions and were all under powered. Your 5.7 Hemi is putting out more power.

It came out of a running car that my Aunt didn't want any longer. It was pretty underpowered when I drove it to the house. I pulled the motor and tranny, prepped and crated it for storage. When I actually get around to building the motor and tranny, I will give the tranny to my brother-in-law, who owns Montgomery Transmission Specialist in AL, and let him build that. My dad and I will build the motor. I don't wantadrag truck (well . . . I do, but my wife will also be driving the truck), but I do want it to be fun at the same time. We will figure all that out when I get back from the desert and back to the U.S.

I would find a duster or some other smaller car to put it into.

If you want to have a little fun with people, find an old 1970's four door Valiant to put it in! Then go hunting for Camaros and Mustangs!

The swap isn't hard. They even make motor mounts for it if you can find the right front crossmember. The Duster or Dart work the same way.

If you can't find a crossmember, there are other ways to mount it. It will fit.

Not to put a damper in your in your idea and all but I dont think you can legally do it. The last I heard as far as "most" states emissions laws, you can only do an engine swap with an engine that is either the same or newer than the one in your current vehicle and it must have been available in the same model of yourvehicle year. So if you had a 4.7 and upgraded to a newer 5.7 you'd be fine as far as emissins go. Otherwise be prepared to go through a lot of red tape and paperwork to get it street legal. Im sure it can be done, but its going to take a bit to get the emissionsto go along with it. Might want to check your states laws for engine swaps before youget far into it.
