hey guys i just have a quick question because this maybe come in handy during the winter time...what do you guys use for towing and where can i buy it?..do you use chains that you can attach to a car if the car needs to be pulled forward or out of something..i also heard of a "come along" in which the chain is pulled itself in order to pull something, any advice or info would help

Thanks

Your post confused me, but that's not hard to do . Are you talking towing another vehicle, like from point A to point B, or just pulling a stuck vehicle out of a ditch or mud?

Yeah... go big on recovery straps. Off road guys have used it for years. Just make sure you are in the safe range for the straps. Also remember it is not only the weight of the vehicle you are pulling but also the resistance of what you are pulling them out of. Engineers in the military have long calculations for vehicle recovery (think that was on an episode of Dirty Jobs) when they are bogged in the mud, but that is with multi ton vehicles. Just don't buy a strap with 2000 lbs of tensile strength and try to pull out something weighing 5000 lbs through a mud bog. Chains can snap and screw up your truck, steel cable can snap and cut right through you.

And make sure you tie off the other end to something solid on your truck, like to the frame or something like that. And probably that should go for the car you are hauling out... there are some funny youtube videos of people getting their ride torn apart by novice towing technique.

Have any of you seen those "******" ropes???
They are like a giant elastic band.
What you do is, get up a little speed to take up the slack on the rope and then, the elastic part comes into play whereby it accelerates the stuck vehicle, out of the bog or snow.
Bear in mind that this is all relatively at low speed etc nothing silly!
The Icelandics use them a lot up in the Glaciers.

A recovery strap or ****** rope will work fine. I've got a winch and still carry a 30,000# rated recovery strap. They both (strap & rope) work along the same principle and have a certain amount of built in flex in them to help unstuck a vehicle. But because of the stretch, it's very important you do not try to use either as a tow strap. If you plan on towing someone, then get a separate tow strap.

Good pont HammerZ71.

They really seem to work fine.
Do a youtube and look for the Top Gear "polar trek" episode.
There's a great example of one in use on that program. Plus, it shows what a 4x4 can really do.
They were the first people in the world, to tranverse to the North pole using 4x4's.
