Default 2003 RAM 1500 4WD Conversion

Did a bit of searching on the subject but heres what it comes down to:

Im researching the 3rd Gen RAM 1500's and would like to know a bit more information about them.

What Transfer case is used in the 1500 4x4 rams?
What Transmission is used in the 1500 4x4 rams?
What Transmission is used in the 1500 2x4 rams?
Is there a difference in the IFS between 2x4 & 4x4? If So What Differences?
Links to successful members that have done a 4x4 swap or SFA swap.

May be doing a 4x4 swap in a 2x4 sRAM 1500 and trying to learn about the truck a bit more before making the plunge into it.

Thanks guys!

Why? It wouldn't be worth the time or money...trade/sell yours and get a 4x4. If you're just bored with money to burn why not build up your engine/tranny?

That is one argument, lets say the truck has sentimental value.. then can you provide the info

Why stick with IFS in a 1500 if you are going through all the trouble of ripping your truck apart? If you are going to do it right, do a full out axle swap, and go with the solid axle. Go to the junk yard and find some heavy duty axles, buy yourself a custom bulletproof tranny with an atlas II, a mount kit to match your tranny to the engine, rebuild the axles with a high spline count, new drive shafts, new shocks with coilovers, lift, new rear spring set, might as well put in lockers when you rebuild the axles with appropriate gearing, new brake set up to slow everything down, and then some big tires and wheels... I am sure I forgot a few things. Go custom on this... buying all new parts from Dodge and then putting the manhours into building a 4x4 out of a 2x4 you might even save money going this route. Either way, it is not a weekend job nor is it going to be cheap. Jeep guys have been doing this sort of thing for years (in the middle, well ok, more like the beginning of the middle, of this axle swap project with my jeep). If you have iTunes, download a series of Xtream4x4, they do this sort of thing on their show all the time. Of course they have a million dollar shop full of every tool you could need with the floor lift and a crap ton of free parts... so they make it look easy.

i think there is a whole lot going on there. much more than just swapping out parts. i've got an 03 4x and the front diff is tucked way up there. my guess is that you will be doing major renovations to your suspension mounts as well as steering, exhaust, and possibly oil pan and pickup tube. i know you're going for sentimental value, but i think your best bet is to get a rolling 4x chassis and finagle your existing body onto it.

If you are hell bent on having all the same parts that come in a 4x4 1500, find someone that has one (or maybe someone on this site can help you out) and get their VIN number. Then go to the Dodge website, there is a place on their somewhere under owner or something like that where you can enter a vin and get the build list for that truck. It will give you all the info you need.

The question isnt whether its logical to do the swap or not.. Im just trying to get technical specs on the 03 1500's just for my knowledge..

I dont have access to a 4x4 1500 VIN (I dont even own a dodge) to research it that way.. isnt that the point of a forum is a central location to gain knowledge on a specific subject, not to tell someone that its a bad idea "Don't Do it" etc..

I would of thought the transfer case's used on 4x4 1500/2500/3500 trucks as well as the diffs and axles would be common knowledge amongst Dodge owners..

I never told you not to do it or that it was a bad idea, I was just trying to give you some ideas of what would be involved (you know, that whole thing of giving knowledge and all that). And why make it sound like you have a dodge when you don't then bash on dodge owners. Anyways, here is your info (From 2005 Model year, since that's what I got):

MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS:

Dakota/ Ram 1500: MAKE Getrag, MODEL 238, SALES CODE DEJ
RAM 2500/ 3500 (5.7): MAKE New Venture Gear, MODEL NVA500, SALES CODE DDP
RAM 2500/ 3500 (late) (5.7): MAKE DaimlerChrysler CVD, MODEL G-56, SALES CODE DEG
ALL HAVE 6 FORWARD SPEEDS

AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS:

Dakota/ Durango: MODEL 42RLE, SALES CODE DG6, SPEEDS 4 Plus
RAM: MODEL 45RFE (Available on RAM 1500), SALES CODE DG4, SPEEDS Multispeed plus
Dakota/ Durango/ Ram: MODEL 545RFE, SALES CODE DGQ, SPEEDS 5 Plus
Ram: MODEL 48RE, SALES CODE DG8, SPEEDS 4 Plus
