Is it true that once you use syntheic oil you can't switch back to conventional oil?

 

That's been floating around since synthetics first came out. It's hogwash, you can switch back any time you want to. But why would you want to?

 

Don't notice a difference for $

 

You may not notice a difference, but it's making a difference. Your engine will run cleaner and last longer with less sludge and other deposits with the synthetic in there. Plus you can go longer (sometimes much longer depending on the oil used) between changes which should justify the cost difference.
As far as seeing/feeling a difference, a lot depends on the brand of synthetic you are using. Unfortunately, an oil only has to be 50% synthetic to be able to call itself a "full synthetic". Running a TRUE synthetic like Royal Purple or Amsoil will give you a difference you can see.
I run Royal Purple in my truck and Jeep Grand Cherokee, I get better acceleration and smoother idling than before and since I switched to Royal Purple in the differentials as well in the Jeep, I'm seeing a solid 2 mpg increase in fuel economy. Plus my oil change intervals is twice as long. Between the mpg gain and it lasting twice as long, the RP actually costs me less than conventional oils...

 

i use to use royal purple. loved it. and as soon as i think its ok to go back to it, im going to! and take it from me, haha, you dont want to deal with sludge!!!

 

Yea Antcap, if you want to know about problems you can have down the road with sludge left by conventional oils and not changing frequently enough, MMStar can write a book about it, and pretty much did, if you check back through his posts in this section a few weeks ago...

is Mobil 1 a true full synthetic? i am about to change the oil in my Ram tomorrow and have been using it for awhile now. what do y'all think about it?

 

I've heard that it's not. I used to swear by it for years, every 3000 miles like clockwork and have NEVER HAD AN OIL RELATED ISSUE. But I've recently switched to Royal Purple and have found that my vehicles run smoother and my mileage is a tad better. It also looks a LOT cleaner at change time, so much so, that I'm letting the Grand Cherokee go 6000 miles to see what it looks like. At twice the change interval I can easily justify the extra cost.

 

maybe i'll spend the cash on the RP......
