Default Ram towing a HEAVY trailer

Hi everyone, I am new to the Ram forum, I have a Dakota so I’m usually over their but I just made a trip in my moms 08' Ram Big Horn and though id share the experience. We pulled a 3 horse goose neck trailer from Miami to Kentucky, just over 1100 miles. We had 2 full horses and two ponies, plus the front section was FILLED with boxes since she was moving. We also had the bed of the trailer filled with stuff including 8 stall mats that weigh around 70lbs each and five people in the truck. Unfortunately I don’t know the total weight of the trailer loaded but I can say I definitely wouldn’t have wanted to pull any more, their was only a couple inches of rear suspension travel and it would frequently bottom out. As for gas mileage in Florida with no hills and doing 50-55mph we averaged 11-11.5 mpg, not as bad as I thought. Once out of Florida and into some hills along with a little increased speed to 55-60 the mileage dropped to about 9mpg. Overall I was impressed with the performance of the truck, going up some of the steeper inclines I had to drop to second and even first to keep my speed from dropping to low, but the truck handled it very well. So I don’t know what others have towed with their ram but i thought this was a pretty big load for this truck and it did it.

Is that in a 1500? That's some serious weight on that truck! I towed a 2 place ATV trailer with 2 800lb+ Polaris Sportsmans, plus one in the bed of my truck, luggage in the back seat and two people in the front seats and mine handled it with no problems. I could barely feel the trailer there, and I averaged 12.5mpg.

I would suggest a 2500 or 3500 for that heavy tongue weight.

Wow is right, that's a serious pull, I would not have wanted to pull that for that distance. My ol' girl would've gotten quite mad at me (like she did when I pulled my 6K travel trailer last weekend.)
