Default Help removing air bag

Has anyone temporarily removed the air bag on a 02+ Ram? I want to remove it to upgrade my steering wheel to leather. Any help would be appreciated.

Iv'e herd so many horror stories about work done at the dealerships. I'm very picky about the interoir of my truck so would like to avoid any bad experiences if possible. Safety does come first so I just wanted to get some idea about what the job might entail.

I'm not sure if you just want to take it out to do the work and put it back in, or if you just want to leave it out altogether. I don't think a dealer will take it out and leave it out...it's about the same as they won't mess with the programming of the computer due to emissions. I don't think they can alter the safety features. If you know someone at a body shop, you might be able to get it done. They do a lot of bag replacements.

Also, my kid took his passenger side bag out to put a Nintendo in his Grand Prix (I know...kids are kids, I quit trying to make any sense out of them). He later had the car stolen, and when it was recovered the insurance company found the bag gone and almost doubled his insurance, so check that out too. You'd hate to have that happen, or even cause the insurance to be cancelled.

Thanks for the information about insurance, no I definitely would not permanently remove the air bag. I want to temporarily remove it while I upgrade my steering wheel to leather and then replace the air bag. I know of a good body shop around here who might do a good job.

I wouldn't mess with it if I were you. You also have to have a special tool to remove the steering wheel.
