Default Gears

I'm looking to change my gears in my 07 quad cab hemi 1500. It has 3.92 now. I am looking for significantly quicker runs to 60, but don't want to lose too much on top end. I have stock tires now, but thinking of getting 33s and a leveling kit. What would be the best gear choice. I was thinking 4.10 or 4.56, but not sure...

4.10 will be pointless. If you do it, go with the 4.56

if your goal is a quicker 0-60 mph run,
shouldn't you figure out ahead of time
what rpm your engine should be at
when it reaches 60 mph?

if you have a auto trans
shouldn't you figure in
about 10% slip in the torque converter?

should your truck reach 60 mph
at the top of 2nd gear
or
at the top of 3rd gear ?

when a shift is made
do you lose a little time?

for the fastest 0-60 time
should you make one shift
or two shifts
figuring in the lost time for a shift?

John Force's daughters
could answer these questions,
and tell you what combination of
tire diameter and rear differential gear
works best.

if these girls can understand it,
why not you?

spending just a little time
before spending a lot of money
to find out things your grandfather's generation
has left to all humans as a free 'gift'
will make you more powerful

My 4:56 gears are the best thing I have done to my Ram yet! I still have great top end and it is really quick off the line! Even with 37" tires! I can only imagine the kick it would have if I had the stock 33's

Its fun with the stock 20's and 31" (?) street tires Best thing I have done to date was adding the 4.56 gears, the 4.10 wont do anything for you...

4.56's where HANDS DOWN the single best mod I have done only second to the SCT tune...

I went from 3.55 gears to 4.56 gears and gained ONLY 300 RPMS@60MPH... With that 300RPM gain I also gained 3-4 MPG at the same time.

If I where to buy a NEW RAM today I would have an appointment tomorrow to have 4.56's installed!

The 4.56's are a great choice for anyone with a 30+ tall tire. If your tires are shorter then you may want to consider 4.10's....

---------------------------------------------------------------
Do the the MATH...
_________________________________________________
1) Find your OVERALL GEAR RATIO
REAR GEAR x TRANSMISSION GEAR = OVERALL GEAR RATIO (OGR)
__________________________________________________
2) Find your RPMS at ANY speed using the OGR
SPEED x OGR x 336 / TIRE HEIGHT = RPMS
__________________________________________________

I have found that the best POWER to MPG Ratio "SWEET SPOT" is approximately 2100RPMs@60MPH... Aim for 2100RPM@60MPH and you will have the best of both worlds.

I hope this helps

SPEED SAFE, AIR RAM
