the box being small is the issue. as you move to a smaller box you can't give as much power to them because the box is small and also not the space upon which the sub operates best at. so by giving them tons of power you will get distortion and other issues. best bet is to move to a smaller sub that requires less rms wattage and don't try to push it so hard.
how are the following settings set at on the amp, input sens or gain, low pass filter, and bass boost. if any of these settings is improperly set it can cause the distortion. also what head unit do you have. how is it tuned and does it have high volt preouts or seperate sub control within.

thats the box that Iam running right now, not too sound like a broken record but you should really take a look at the Image Dynamics subs they do not need hardly any air space and they sound great in that box unlike 80 percent of other subs that fit in that box believe me I spent alot of money on subs for that box before I found the right ones...
