Default 6.1 intake and cam to 5.7, Any thoughts

OK I am sure this question has been asked many times, I know I should look it up first but I have a few other questions than just the intake and cam. One will the crank also mate up to the block and make the motor a stroker or is the crank the same on both? Second will the heads mate up as well? Third I am looking to upgrade my 5.7, I do have MDS on my truck so I know I will have to remove the sensor or get a cam that is made for MDS, and forth is the intake question about if it will work. Hammer do you know anything about this or have some input on this? I have about 70,000 on an 06 ram that I bought brand new. I have the normal power adder stuff, K&N, programmer, exaust and a small lift. I am going to be putting in new gears in the very near future, most likely 4.56 for the bigger tires I am going to put on it.

Any input on this at all will be a lot of help guys, thanks!!

The 6.1 top end swap has been done already by a few people. You will need an electric fan as you cannot run one with the 6.1 intake (also necessitating a different air box routing) as the throttle body is out front and not on top. With the heads, I know the chamber sizes are different, but you can get 6.1 heads (bigger ports) with the 5.7 chamber size, eliminating port mismatch from the intake. If I'm not mistaken, the cranks are basically the same, just the 5.7 is a nodular (cast) and the 6.1 is forged. I know they make aftermarket cams to work with MDS, but for bigger power gains you will have to eliminate it altogether (they make cam kits to do just that as well). The programmer will definitely help towards making things work right (depending on how powerful you decide to go, you may need custom computer). I know there's something else with the 6.1 intake, something about the truck computer not recognizing the TB from that intake and having to get it programmed into the computer. A little research (or anyone who's done it) should clear the rest up.

Thanks for the input Lonestar! I am searching the net right now for intake and cam options for my ram so that helps.

Search the KRC Performance site they do this. If you have any questions call there & ask for Marty knows more about the Hemi than anyone I've ever talked to. He's also very personable and I'm sure would take the time to tell you all you need to know. Just remember, he's also in this business to make a living.

I'm waiting to see if someone figures out how to retrofit the better flowing heads from the 09 hemi to the older blocks.

Looks like the 6.1L intake is the same one used on the 09 Ram.

Nooo, design is somewhat similiar on the outside, but the inside is a whole other matter. The new one has like an active intake manifold with like little doors inside that switches it from short runners to long runners when needed. Plus the TB is pointed up.
