Default 2wd vs awd

so i am wondering if a 2004 dodge ram with the electronic controller for 2wd, 4wh, 4wl, has a different transfer case then one with awd option? If not what are the differences, i blew apart my front diff today and my buddy has the same truck as me but not the laramie version so he has 2wd on his drivetrain controller instead of awd, and i want to convert mine to not have awd to save my front diff from not being beat on when i dont need it to be but jsut trying to figure out what i would need to change it to not be awd when not in 4wd?

thanks

differnet gears probably. Also, the AWD has different internals all together (clutch packs...etc). It's meant to be in AWD all of the time. Taking turns in an AWD vehicle is far easier than in a 4wd "part time" vehicle. Any vehicle that has 2wd/4wd/4lo is called a "pat time"4wd. The AWD is fully engaged so it would be a "full time" 4wd. Not even the same.

I know awd was an option on these trucks but is it really all that common? It doesn't seem like too many members have it...

I believe programming in the PCM of an AWD is different than a 4x4 and the Tcase setup may be a little different

It could just be the programming! My 2000 Silverado had an AWD along with 2wd/4wd/4lo. It had them all. In GM's scenerio, it utilized the 2wd mode until the ecu detected rear wheel slippage and instantly kicked in 4wd so to save on tires and gas and wearable drivetrain. If Dodge copied them and used the same thing, then it's simply a ecu program. Here's an Ebay link and they say nothing about it http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/02-03...spagenameZWD1V

Thats the way our 05 burban does it. With the ram though I remember reading it cuts alot of torque through torque management. The awd LX cars dont have as much get up and go as a 2wd one. Yes they hook but the PCM doesnt allow them the full power that they want.. Thank you throttle by wire and stupid *** PCM

I'm going out on a limb, AWD and 4x4 can't share the same transfer case, 4x4 and AWD are know where close to being the same, AWD's don't have a transfer case at all, just a center differential with drive shafts to the front and rear diferentials, in a part time 4x4, the transfer case is the center diferential.
