FYI - the muffler has nothing to do with emissions. The catalytic converters handle that. Here in the Houston, TX area they have the emissions testing. I had a Corvette with headers, cats, and straight exhaust all the way back. I passed emissions with flying colors every time.

I think he means noise emissions. Some places measure the sound with a decibel meter.

NY is just as bad as MA. There's no law in NY stating you must have a muffler. Mufflers aren't a part of any emissions regulation. You can have a 2009 Ram and cut everything off after the catalytic converter and pass inspection. Now the problem is Decibel rating. You must have an exhaust that is relatively quiet or the cops can and will ticket you. We have to have our cars OBD-II port hooked up to DMV's site through a landline internet cble so they can read any trouble codes before they issue an inspection ticket.

We have noise laws in my city. I have a magnaflow single 3in dual 2.5 out. It has a low almost quiet rumble at idle but when i drop the hammer people know im there. Ive never been ticketed yet. The bike on the other hand is a different story
