the only real way to tell would be to have your oil tested. got any friends who work with heavy equip or fleet maintanence. they send their oil out to have it checked for wear or impending failure, its cheap compared to the price of an engine, final drive, etc.. i kinda over simplified it but you get the idea
plus on the up side if they say you can safely push your interval to 7k it will lower your costs. 7qts mobil1 + filter about $40, every 7k is better than every 3k. i used to have my jeep tested and it could safely go 6-7k on mobil1, that was on old 4.2l carbed,k&n and header. and that was not the extended run just regular mobil1.

The reason I change at 3,000 is because the truck tells me to. The change oil indicator comes on at that time. The mechanic at the dealership said that it comes on at either 3,000 or somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000 depending on driving conditions. He said since I have a 150 mile daily commute that 3,000 is probably the way to go. I think I'll stick with the regular synthetic because it's more readily available here. I've never seen Royal Purple or Amsoil anywhere in town. Extended Performance is around here, but it's hard to find all seven quarts at one time. I think I'll just stick with the regular Mobil 1 synthetic every 3,000 and start using a Mobil 1 or KN filter every other oil change.

I have an 03 Ram 5.7 with 96500 miles on it and ran Mobil 1 since day one with Fram PH8A, since its a bigger filter than stock and so far everything has been running fine, and yes the oil gets pretty dirty since I pull a trailer everyday for about 60 miles a day 9 month of the year. I just switch to Mobil Truck Extreme 10w-40 just for the up and coming summer heat here in DFW and to give me alittle more time between oil changes.

I change oil for a living (literally) and I can not stress enough to stay away from Fram filters. Same with the filters used at generic oil change places such as Jiffy Lube (Mile gaurd, Motor Trend, Fram, Installer Edge), Valvoline, Firestone, and Mr. Pride. If you want to see why, cut one open. Pick a quality filter such as Purolator, Mobil 1, Wix, or K&N. As long as it has sytnthetic filter media it should be fine. As for the oil, changing Mobil 1 every 3,000 is ridiculous unless you are in the severe condition drivin category. Its just a waste of money. They tested Mobil 1 back in the 70's on a fleet of police cars and put over 100,000 miles on them and only changed the filter every 10,000. It had less internal engine wear than the other test cars which used conventional and changed oil and filter every 3,000.

Didn't help mine at all. Kind of hard with the water oil they recommend. I disabled my MDS so the next oil change will be 5w30 or 10w30 and not the watery 5w20 that's in there currently.

I use Mobil 1 Extended Peformance for my Mustang for 4yrs now. It gets changed every season although I have only driven the car for a total of 3kmi since I bought it....lol It sees high revvs and heavy abuse when she's out on the road. With 550hp at the crank she's a screamer.
I did pour in Extended performance in my truck, but it will se a regular oil change every 5kmi regardless of towing, sitting...etc. It's a round number that's very reasonable so when I see the truck has 35kmi or 40kmi I kno, it's time for a change. Not this crap of "when did i change the oil last"..???? bullcrap...lol

Also, HAMMER, there was a spec sheet that I posted up a while back that was independently done for testing of various oil filters. Purolator Pure one was ahead of Mobil 1 (Bosch made) and then came K&N and then there was Wix right next to Fram Performance and then Fram regular was at the bottom.

K&N is waaayyyy over priced for the filtration that it has. The Purolator Pure one is proven to be a very top notch filter with internals dedicated specifically for use with Synthetic oils same as the Mobil 1 filter. The Purolator filters out microns half the size of even the Mobil 1 filter. best buy IMO at only $7 a filter.

I typicall run Mobil1 15w-50 with a Fram HP1. The filter has a better seal and in Texas it can get hot in the summer so I've opted for the heavier viscosity. No issues between 5K changes.....

However, it's the filter that would be cause for concern during long intervals.
Amsoil was exposed not long ago when they claimed 20k mile+ life out of it's synthetic. It later came out that they changed the filter every 3k and topped off any lost oil.

I used to use Mobil 1 exclusively, changed every 3k with a good solid filter like Mobil 1, Wix or Purolator. Within the past year or so, I decided to try Royal Purple after reading reports over the last few years on it. It seems that RP & Amsoil are arguably on a top tier by themselves and then come the Mobil 1, Valvoline Pure Synthetic and a few others. The kicker was that my local auto parts store had a buy 1, get 1 on RP in the 10w/30 & 10w/40 weights only (seems with all the newer engines calling for 5w/30 & 5w/20, the heavier weights were not moving as well). My GC calls for 10w/30.
I was very pleased with the RP and how it performed in my Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 H.O. engine. An immediate gain of about 1.5-2 mpg over the Mobil 1 and the engine idled/ran noticeably smoother. Another plus was that when I changed the oil, it was a LOT cleaner than the Mobil 1 had been. So I decided to change my interval to every 6k. This also helps me to justify the added cost of the RP.
I'm now doing the exact same thing in my Hemi truck, although I've not really noticed a measurable mpg gain, the engine is also running smoother and the "Hemi Tick", although still present, is noticeably quieter.

With me having the GC and the truck, the 6k intervals last me about 6 months in the Jeep and about 9 months in the truck. It looks as though you put a lot of miles on your truck. I'd say use the Extended Performance or RP or Amsoil with a good quality filter, personally the Wix (NAPA Gold) is my favorite, but I've used the Mobil 1 and Purolator also. K&N also routinely gets good reviews. But go to 6k or about once a month for you as opposed to every two weeks. Take a good look at the oil when you drain it, or better yet, have the used oil tested. Then formulate an opinion on how long you can go. Although I'd not leave a filter in for more than 6k, it's possible you may be able to go 12k with no measurable oil breakdown and just having to change the filter and top the oil off every 6k, saving you some $ and a little time...

We draw almost the same conclusion.

I like, and have settled on the new Amsoil Microfibre synthetic media filters w/bypass filter. I mix 50/50%, 0-30 Signature Series with 10-40 Amsoil premium MC synthetic oil and change oil and filter once a year.

I have another truck that I put 136,000K miles on and had changed the oil maybe 5 times total when the intake gasket failed causing water to be sucked in breaking the #4 piston. The shop that examined the engine stated there was no measurable wear on any of the bearing surfaces.

Bottom line though is that seems of prove 3K oil changes are a terrible waste if 1st class synthetic oils and filters are used.
