so, the dealer called me back today...the #5 and 6 pistons are being replaced, along with the entire intake manifold. They will only replace the spark plugs in those cylinders, and will not change the oil under warranty. I have to pay for the oil change, which i want done before it leaves the dealer, in fear of metal shavings, coolant, etc. in the old oil now. If i buy the plugs, they will install all of them free of labor though, so thats not so bad i guess. Its kinda weird, about a week ago I priced plugs and planned on changing them just to start the year on fresh plugs...before this happened. And, they found a small leak in the radiator, and said they are not sure if its covered under warranty but they will let me know. could be worse, but could be better too i presume.

Sounds like it dropped a valve or two. Just buy a whole set of plugs and let them put them all in.
My dealer only charges about $36 for a oil change using Mopar oil and filter. They used a 5qt jug and two one quart bottles. I watched

Sounds like lots of pre-detonation blew the spark plugs apart and the insulation from the plugs slightly bent a valve or two.

As for the oil, what kind of shape is it in? When was the last time you changed it because I have to be right up front with ya. If that was my truck and I had just changed the oil only 1,000 miles ago and they won't pay for a new oil change because of the damage that was covered under warranty caused? Bullsh*t. The items that were effected were covered by warranty items, those items should all be covered. If the covered items didn't fail, then you wouldn't have to change your oil!

I wouldn't change the oil. I would tell them to pour the old oil back in and then when your motor burns ans scores every rod and bearing journal in that shortblock, then you'll go back in and get another motor! Tell them that and see what they say.

You bought the truck used (2004 bought in 2007)
You would have been able to get the 7/70 powertrain ONLY if you are the second (not third or more) owner of the vehicle AND paid a $150 transfer fee within 30-days of your purchase.
You can download the warranty booklet from the following site:

Please ask the dealership how they plan on REPLACING PISTONS without removing the oil pan and draining the oil. What in the holy hell is getting into these dealerships? The oil wouldn't be conaminated if the damn engine didn't go boom. Really...it is just rediculous. I would have told them they are ****ing nuts. I know this stuff has gotten me over exicted here recently but I have never read about such nonsense in my life.

And if they are not going to repair the radiator under warranty tell them not to ****ing touch it!

I had about 1500 miles on the oil change, I told them that. I always have it done with our fleet trucks at work every 3000 miles thru the mobile lube guy (he comes to the shop, i pay him $40 cant beat it). They said they would fill it up with the neccessary oil, but would not touch the filter. Ill buy the plugs and let them put em in, but im gonna try to get them to cover at least the oil change for me. I'll do the radiator myself if they dont cover it. The warranty thing makes sense, at least i know the powertrain is covered for 7/70,000. they want almost $80 to do the oil change there, it is pretty rediculous. Im trying really, really hard to stay level-headed when handling this, but I have a feeling its going to get extremely frustrating. Ill be banging my head against the wall by the time its all said and done im sure!

You would think they would want to change the filter in this instance. I could understand if they won't cover the cost of Synthetic fluid, but they should atleast cover the difference of Conventional oil and Synthetic if that's the case. $80 for a basic oil change is an outcry for murder. Dealer or not unless it's Synthetic.

My dealer is $36 for mopar oil and filter and about $110 for Mobil 1 Synthetic with Mopar filter.

Looking at the post again, it does sound like detonation destroyed the pistons and plugs. I hope they pulled both heads and checked all of them. Next, they need to find out why it happened in the first place. Clogged fuel filter, weak fuel pump, dirty injectors, ecm issues causing it to run lean?? If not, it might happen again!!

I have 67500 miles on my 03 hemi. Brought it to the dealer for a misfire on cylinder 8 and a rapping sound, oil blowing out spark plug in valve cover. Almost the same problem the dealer claims that one of the plugs blew out the ceramic and that I should have replaced all the plugs two times already. They said it was not covered under warranty for that reason. When I asked why oil was blowing out the plug hole they said that because the plug was leaking the cylinder was creating to much vacuum and pulling the oil from the valve train. Just got my truck back last night and plan to do compression test and replace all the plugs.
Does this seem like a B.S excuse from the dealer? I have a feeling they are just waiting till my 70,000 mile warranty is up.

well, i have a 04 hemi as well. i've got a lot of mods done to my truck. round about 60k number 5 cylinder hit one of the spark plugs. the truck started running like crap and i thought to the motor was crap. i pulled the plugs and checked compression. compression was fine on five. put the plugs back in and cleared the codes. drove her and she is fine to this day. she's got 78k on her now. i also just had to rebuild the tranny like three weeks ago. as well as the rear end like two months ago. broke them drag racing.
