Default 2004 5.7 needs a new engine?

I have an 04 Hemi 4wd and the check engine light came on. Took it to Autozone, they said they thought it was a misfire in cyl.5. Took it to the dealer under extended warranty, and they said that a couple spark plugs had shattered, and it needs a new engine. it only has 58,xxx miles on it. i searched and didnt find really anything similar, has anyone heard of needing a new engine with so few miles on it?

jeeze this is painful to read, my 04's check engine light is on, hopefully it wont be as serious as your problem, sounds like you have some serious damage. good luck.

That doesn't make sense to me, unless they shattered on the inside? If it was just the porcelain, then nothing internal should be damaged unless you have another serious problem, like premature detonation? I'm curious, was this determination after pulling a head off, or from some dealer flowchart?

okay, the dealer just called. The determination was after pulling the plugs and inspecting. They said it is covered under extended warranty, and they were pulling the motor today to begin teardown. After teardown, they would determine the exact cause and let me know if I get a whole new block, just heads, etc. Its at least a week with no truck though, and its my only ride! could be worse, Its the only warranty I have ever purchased on a vehicle and sure am glad I did! FYI, the truck, to me, was acting like the torque converter was going bad. The whole truck started shaking at idle after starting it up, and progressively got worse over the course of 2 days. I'll update here as i find out more, if anyone is interested in the outcome.

Weird...going from checking the plugs to a tear down is a big step with a lot of holes. Either you don't have all the information or something else is going on.

Yeah, lotta holes in the story from the dealer. Would be interested to hear the final verdict.

The extended warranty is nice but you should have been covered anyway, the '04s had a 7/70 Powertrain Warranty...

Hammer-where can i get more info on the 7/70 warranty? I was told I had to purchase the extended one, and it only goes to 7/70.....whatever the original factory warranty was, i was told it was expired. Im not sure what the original one was supposed to cover, i purchased it in august 07.

My '04 has the 7/70, power train and had 3/36 bumper to bumper. I can't imagine yours could be any different. I think it was mid '05 they went back to 3/36 on everything until they came out with the Lifetime Power Train deal.
But, even though I've not had to use it, I know for a fact the '04s (and '03s for that matter) were 7/70.
Send a PM to Parts/Service, as a service mgr. he'll know the details.

It's possible you extended the bumper-to-bumper to 7/70 to match the power train warranty. I know my mom got an '08 Grand Caravan with Lifetime Powertrain and bought the additional coverage to take the bumper-to-bumper from 3/36 up to 7 years, 100,000 miles. Figuring she'd not have to worry about a thing except for tires, wipers and maybe brakes for seven years...
