My experience with the 4.56
In my pursuit to keep the engine from lugging at certain times, I researched users reviews of the 4.56 gears here on the forum. I was surprised to see some members vehemently telling others "Don't do it, way too much gear" and other negative comments so I thought I would post my 1st hand experience with the new years.
First off, I have an 05 Ram Hemi Q/C 2wd with stock 20's and Air Aid, SC Cortex and Magnaflow Cat Back. I had a reputable shop here in Bham,AL do the install for about $260 labor.
On the road with the new gears, "I love them" and one of the best mods I could have done. Believe me as a risk averse person, I did my homework before putting these in so I suggest to others to do the same and make your own judgement. In town, the engine has to work less to achieve the same results and I found it to be a gear that is very livable on the highway. With 33" dia. stock tires, I am turning about 2200 rpm on the interstate which is not bad. If I had a manual trans. I can't say I would have went with this low of a gear but with the auto, its perfect.
Around town I have picked up about 1 to 1.5 mpg and don't have specific numbers for the hwy but I can't see any loss from my 19-21.5 mpg I was getting before the gears. It's all in how you drive it. I don't race my truck but just wanted it to drive better and the 4.56 helped greatly. To handle the additional heat, I have a PML rear diff cover coming which will be topped off with Mobil 1 or Amsoil 75W-140 to take care of cooling.
In summary, well worth the money and very livable both in city and highway and would do it again in a heartbeat. Hope this helps!

Ed

Good deal. I've found through the years that the only people who talk negative about a gear upgrade are either those who've not done it or those who have had a poor install...
I found some Richmond gears for Mopar for around $300. What size rear end does the Dodge have? Is the 9.25" size? Thanks. I have been really comtemplating this upgrade. The 3.21 is kind of a dog.....LOL
Yes, 9.25 it what you have. The ring and pinion get replaced. I would get these, they usually come with an install kit http://nationaldrivetrain.com/shopsi...RYSLER925.HTML
They list the actual ring gear as only 8.8". Is this correct?? If so, why call it a 9.25"?

wow, i never knew dodges came with a 3.21. that must suck. i have the 3.73 in my 2500, and now with the 34" wheels, it cant even get out of its own way. my next mod is going to be 4.56 gears for sure.
I really wanted to switch to 4.56's when I got my auburn istalled. but I just cant afford to do both axles at the same time.

Motives are excellent gears, as are Precisions. Genuine Gears don't have quite the reputation but offer a Lifetime Warranty. Richmonds are probably on par with the Genuine's, right below the Motives & Precisions. I've used to always read great things about Yukons, but also know of at least one 'Net based dealer who dropped them due to too many returns, and lately have read some posts about problems, so I'd probably stay clear of those.
