Did you drive with the parking brake on or something? They should have little wear unless they have been dragging!

as you should see from the pics, they never get used, thats why they are totally brittle dry and rusty, and why they broke. It looks like the the shoe pads rusted apart from the backing plate of the shoes.

they were new 6-7 years ago, then the iowa weather took its toll.

good write up smokey. I had the truck at the dealer and they took off the rubber filler cap on the diff. They broke the yellow paint line my other dealer left on their when they serviced it for the diff fluid change. I saw some fluid leaking out and the paint line was broken and wanted to make sure they put enough in, dont even ask me why they were fuc*king with it they had no reason to be down there unless trying to sabatage something. How do I know how much Im supposed to have in it? Should I replace the rubber seal to be on the safe side?

Thanks for the sensor info too man it took about 24 minutes and I saved a couple hundred, you are the man!

Did you have them do anything? Oil change or otherwise? I know anytime I do an oil change I inspect diff fluid.

No problem on the sensor info, glad it helped.

I went to autozone and put in about 1/3 of the 1 quart 75w 140 mobil 1 diff fluid. I was pretty low considering it only takes about 2.65 quarts or something. They were hooking it up to a starscan to pull a code for diagnostic, but I dont know why they would even mess with it? I filled it up till it came up to the rubber opening. Is that right?
