LMAO, yeah your probably right with your ending comment..... That's exactly what happened when I finished my 87 GTA LS-1 conversion. and my old CJ-7 with a 340 in it....

I spent about $5K on both those motors and had no intentions of ever racing them in any formal setting.... That Jeep ended up so overpowered (power to weight ratio) that I had a blast goofing off with it. I could nail it and literally stand it up on it's *** end...it was a blast.
I've got some pictures around here somewhere, where I stood it up and it slowly fell backwards on the spare tire and sat there. we had to literally push it back on it's wheels... It was funnier then hell ...

Well I'm older now so I don't think I'll be too hard on it but who know.....my mid-life crisis might kick in again and I'll end up building up the motor after all.

Default got my programmer today

I got the Superchips Cortex Programmer today....
I'm going to do the internet update to it tomorrow after work and program the truck tomorrow night...

I sure hope this thing is worth a darn..... It wasn't cheap that's for sure!!!!!

I had my scanner hooked to her this afternoon and I noticed my IAT was showing like 98 degrees when it was about 68 outside... I began looking around and discovered the air box was absorbing heat off the engine and transferring it to the IAT sensor.

Sooo, I fixed it.....

I went to Radio shack and bought a package of resistors and went through them until I found one that reduced the IAT temp where I wanted it.... I cut and soldered the new resistor in the IAT signal wire which turns down the voltage from the IAT but also allows it to keep reporting to the PCM, but just a lower Temperature.... Now the PCM is getting the same temp from the IAT as the outside air so underhood temps are no longer affecting the IAT's signal.... Truck seems much more responsive now.

easy, quick and cheap mod. I recommend it after seeing all the IAT gimmicks on eBay claiming 30, 40 even 100 HP LMAO....

How did you hook up the resistor? Do you know the size, color codes, maybe a picture?

The IAT signal wire is the blue with red strip wire on my 06.

I checked the IAT temp with my scanner prior to cutting it, it showed 98 degrees being reported from the IAT sensor when the outside temp was 68....

I cut the IAT signal wire (scanner then shows IAT at -40) I then began trying different resistors holding them in-line on the signal wire and looking at my scanner to see what temp it showed.....

When I found one that dropped the temp to match the outside temp I soldered it in-line on the signal wire.... I used blue shrink wrap to seal it.....

Now with my engine fully warmed up (hood closed) my IAT matches the outside temperature instead of 30 degrees hotter.

I'll include a couple pictures to help you out..... I bought a 100 assortment pack of 1/4 watt resistors from Radio shack for $6.... The colors I stuck with are Red, Red, Red, Gold. Package says that color combination is 2x100@5%

Hollar at me if you have any further questions.

Hey thanks for the info, it was exactly what I was looking for. Couple more questions:

- What scanner were you using to read the IAT?
- How is the Programmer working out for you? Did you get the 3950 Cortex or the 3815 Flashpaq? The site says the 3950 is just for the Hemi. What adjustments have you used it for yet?

Thanks Again!

Your quite welcome....No problem at all!

I have two scanners...an older (Snap on) which has half the features my cheap one does... My other is an Actron CP9180..... Which like I said does more then the $2K Snap-on..

I keep the Actron in my truck most of the time so I can monitor Long term fuel trim.

On that subject I ment to add to my last post concerning the IAT resistor....
On the stock tune I monitored my Long term fuel trim for a couple weeks with my scanner during normal driving to get an average LTFT number..... My 06 averaged -1.07 over the course of a week and a half which indicates the PCM is pulling fuel back from the engine most of the time..... This is great for fuel economy but terrible for performance...

With the resistor installed in the IAT signal wire my long term fuel trim has increased to .09 (average) all the time. Which means it is now giving the engine a tad bit more fuel under all engine load conditions..... this gave me a very noticeable increase in responsiveness from the truck. The throttle is now more crisp and shifting is also a bit more precise and the effect on fuel mileage is minimal...Gas mileage went down about 2 tenths overall. Hope this info helps anyone curious about the IAT and how it effects the performance.

SuperChips has begun a new program with the Cortex tuner..... checkout SuperChipscortex.com and you'll see what I mean....
Their Cortex now supports same OEM, multiple vehicles and are expandable for add on sensors or gauges. You can move your tune around like if you have a (same oem) Sports car and a truck.... You can tune your truck for your weekly drive and then return it to stock Friday night and tune your Hemi car for your weekend playing. The Cortex is very flexible.

Thats why I went with the Cortex instead of the Flashpaq. Once hooked to a vehicle the Flashpaq
learns the vin and is Vin locked to that vehicle from that point on. Cortex is only locked to a vehicle while it is tuned....return the vehicle back to the stock program and the Cortex is again unlocked from that vin and can be used on another (same OEM) vehicle.

The 3950 Cortex fits all 8 cyl and CTD Dodge vehicles from 2003 to 2008..... Gas and diesel. 4.7, 5.7, 6.1, and Cummins all in one tuner or part number.

Once I researched it I was sold... It is one of the most advanced self tuners on the market now....

My next step will be a custom tune when I either go with the STS turbo or get into deeper engine mods.... Haven't quite made up my mind yet.

I'm trying each tune it offers to see the differences between them. There is "Economy, 87 Octane, Towing, and Performance (93 octane) tunes. I'm on the 87 tune right now..... I'm seeing big differences from stock.

I also raised the shift points which keeps it in the powerband longer.

I've been looking for a cheap 4.7 that i can build up..... One to build and play with and keep my engine low mile and stock in the garage lol

Yeah I know....you all told me so.....

Peace!

I laughed when you said that you haven't made up your mind about turbo or more mods..I knew it no matter how old you get you will never out grow the as my wife callsd it 'tim taylor attitude...more power. "if a passanger can lift his hand off the seat when you accelerate.....keep trying!!!

You got that right lol!!!!!!!

I dunno my wife promptly reminded me today that I'm not 20 anymore...... She can't understand why somebody would want to tear into a perfectly good vehicle. Women never understand lol
