About to do my first oil change, and was wondering what is a good oil and filter.
It's an '04 ram 1500 with the 5.7.

 

Royal Purple and a Wix or Purolator filter, changed every 6k miles is my credo!!!

 

royal purple or mobil 1 oil and mobil 1 filter. available at your local auto parts store. go! now before u get swarmed by the crazy mob about to give you way too many opinions and a lot of crap for asking this question!

 

yeah, I left off the Mobil 1 filter, K&N is good too. But since changing from Mobil 1 oil to Royal Purple, I'm really sold on the RP oil though.


Oh yeah, and monkey-boy, the NAPA Gold filter is a Wix!!!

Is royal purple easy to find , is it a off the shelf oil like Mobil .

 

Well, it won't be like maybe Wal-Mart easy (it's hit & mis there), or found in an aisle at your favorite grocery store, but all or most auto parts stores carry it. It certainly isn't like Amsoil hard to get though (which is incidentally, the only other oil I'd put in RPs league).
It's pricey, but I doubled my change internval, justifying the additional cost, and although I've not had it physically tested, it appears to be in better shape to the naked eye than Mobil 1 was at half the change interval...
