Default gas/overhead

so i pulled into my girlfriends house with like 71miles left till E and a little shy of a quarter tank, go out after like 2 hours (in roughly 2degrees temp) start it up to move it and its reading just over 40 till empty and its closer to an 1/8th of a tank, wondering why it just randomly dropped, i figured maybe the cold could mess up the overhead but dont think it would mess up the actual gas gauge

They go off of the same signal as far as the amount of fuel in the tank goes...the amount till empty is calculated off that and your current average/instant mpg so that will also go down. Mine also varies once in awhile...its the nature of the bobber. Was the truck level when you started it back up?

parking on any kind of incline will throw off the reading too. I loose an eighth of a tank when I pull into my driveway.

Man, it's too dag on cold to be running it that low on gas. Any water will freeze up too fast that low. I try to stay at least 1/2 tank in the winter.
It also keeps enough fuel around the pump to keep it cool if you stay over 1/4 tank.

I notice that when I let my truck idle for any time at all, like 5-10min, the reading drops significantly on miles to empty. Tjis is because your burning gas and not moving.

My truck always seems to do that as well. The first time it happened it scared the **** out of me...I went outside in the morning and it had snowed, and my tank was down like a quarter of a tank.

I thought maybe my gas got siphoned by the hoodrats at the apts next to mine, but after I started driving and the truck warmed up, the gauge started going up to where it was when I parked it the night before.

anyone know why after resetting my PCM 3 weeks ago my MPG overhead normally always shows 0.0mpg?? When I start driving it gradually goes up but as soon as I crank the engine it shows 0.0mpg. Never did that before...what tells the little guy what my MPG is anyways? Just wondering if there is a sensor or something I can replace?
