Yup, the Ohio Player is right, as far as bolt on's go, Torque adders take from top end, top end mods borrow from torque. Only major work like heads, cams, headers, etc can you get both. Although for the little bit of top end loss, 4.56 gears will be killer off the line...
Whats the lowest gear you can go before running into differential prolems??
I believe our trucks our 3.55 geared, so even 4.10's would be a lotta help.
To the op, might as well put a posi unit of some sort while you're in there, that low gear will make that one tire fire a little easier

The 4.56's will give you a ton off the line compared to stock. Dodgenitto has 4.56's with his hemi truck and 37'' mudders and can beat a stock hemi without a problem. 4.56's will also increase your gas mileage if you do alot of in-town driving. I guess that the question is how fast are you looking to go? with the 4.56's you won't be able to go over 120, but to be honestly how many times are you going to be taking your 5200lbs truck up to that speed. This thing is made to haul things and have alot of TQ. If you want something that will go fast buy a charger. just my .02

2) If you have a towing package then you usually have 3.92's otherwise it's the lame 3.55's.
3) If you are doing gears get a detroit tru-trac unit. Great for power transfer and will help you from the dreaded one-tire burn out. The stock lsd's are ticking timebombs and unpredictible with their performance.

Hmm, never heard of lower gears helping gas mileage. That would be sweet, but I think unlikely. Either way, 4.56's may be the way Im going. I do almost no highway driving, and def no top speed runs, lol, and I can get them installed for free (ol' mans transmission shop). How much would these run? Couple 3 hundred? hhhmmmmmmm

As far as the price I would go to airram.com for parts since your dad is doing the install. figure right about $1000. Reason I say that is because if you are doing this then you want it done right. Get either Yukon/motive 4.56 gears for the front+rear, the master install kits for the front and rear (they include new bearings+bushings), and get a Detroit Tru-trac. The LSD's in our trucks are a ticking timebomb and don't work worth a darn. Hell my truck didn't want to move in 2 inches of snow in 2wd with 11.5'' wide AT's. Our LSD's SUCK!!! the Detroit Tru trac is the way to go for a daily driver because it is open going around turns, but if you put the peddle down both tires will be going. If you are tinkering with something like that I would not cheap out. Just my humble .02

You can get a set of Motive gears for $200 from Air Ram and other vendors. If your Dad can install them, that would be sweet.
I have the 3.21 gears.....ouch. Definitely want to get 4.10s soon.
