I put on a cheap ebay CAI with a K&N filter a while back and I decided to make a heat shield for it. A little sheet metal, some pipe insulating tape, some rubber pipe insulation, and some little screws and such, and here it is. It might not look as good as the fancy ones, but it seems to be getting the job done. It certainly sounds even better now.

And I only cut myself FOUR times working with the sheet metal. Evidently, sheet metal work is not my thing.

Well, those pics I took with my cell phone when it was done. I'll have to go out there tomorrow when it's light and use my real camera. The pictures definitely look a bit rougher and smaller once you upload them here.

you should fill in the gap right above the intake to block hot air, otherwise all the rubber on top of the box you fabbed up is useless.

 

Yeah, I didn't necessarily expect it to seal perfectly. I mostly did this to keep mud and water from getting flung all over the thing. The rubber is almost more for keeping things from rattling than for a perfect seal. It'll at least block most of the heat and keep the cool air directed where I want it. And it should keep most of the mud off. The last time I took it off road I swear I was washing in the engine compartment for freakin weeks.

Looks good...by the looks of your pic there it seems like you do some offroading, it's always cool to see new trucks out in the woods on the trails...

 

Yeah, I think with the ebay intake, shipping, and the supplies for the heat shield I came in right around $100.

And yes, this truck just seems to love the trails. Now I just need to find some more places to go around here. If anybody out there lives around Southeastern VA and knows of some good places I can go that won't land me in court, I'd love to hear about it.
