I was quoted $1,000 from a local dealer on an A.R.E. V-Series cap for my short bed. It's not the most sexy looking of caps, but it's lockable dry storage! If you're willing to spend that much, you may be able to get a brand new one that you won't have to worry about painting.
I will probably pull the trigger on a cap one day, once I decide to save the money.
FWIW, I think caps look great on all trucks. I'm 24.
