Also, it would do the same in 4x4 because all you did is connect the front axle to the stuck rear axle. It would move the same distance.
I had that happen on my '06 Mustang 3 years ago. And actually, it does sound like a very similar situation. I was stuck in my parking space at work. I put it in reverse, and it didn't go anywhere, even giving it a lot of gas. I put it in drive and it moved a little bit. Put it back in reverse, gave it more gas, heard a pop, and then it was fine. Took it to the dealer, and they replaced the boots around the e-brake line because it had frozen.

I've had that happen on my old car and on the ram before. I guess this did feel similar, but it's weird that it didn't lock up till i moved.

That's the single thing has me leaning toward it being another issue. To my thinking, if it were frozen, it wouldn't have begun to move just fine and then bound up. I would think it wouldn't have budged at all from the get go...

so Hammer says to me 'beat the hell out of it and see what gives', and I was reluctant cuz it's cold out and I wouldn't be able to fix it. But, I did it anyway. Drove the hell out if it (so much for mileage testing). and guess what happened...NOT A DAMN THING.

She took it all and said 'more please', the backlash almsot went away too, didn't feel anything this morning. I think it was just ice, cuz nothing is wrong with her. tried 4HI, 4 LO, and then put it in neutral and tried to put it in 2wd while doing 20 mph (don't do that, stop first).
