hauling shingles in the bed
What is the most weight I can haul in the bed of my truck? I need to get 16 squares of shingles and wondering if that is too much for the truck. I've heard each square weighs around 225 pounds which means the total load will be 3600 pounds.
I roofed for many years. If one square weighs 225 pounds that means you are getting dimensional shake shingles, nice pick by the way. They are the best shingles and only a fraction of the cost up front more. I know we used to haul around 15-30 packs of shingles in our work van. This was an '86 GMC Sierra or whatever van. The rear end help up fine, but we also removed the seats to accommodate.
These trucks are rated by their name in terms of payload. So the 1500 has a 1/2 ton payload rating, or about 1000 pounds and them some in my opinion. The 2500 has a 3/4 ton rating and allows up to about 2000 pounds of payload. So I don't think your truck is probably "rated" for 3600 pounds unless it is a 3500 with suspension modifications. Maybe one of the experts will chime in however.
