Question Air filter box that connects to TB

My question is, what is the engineering standpoint to offer that "hat" that connects to the throttle body as opposed to having an Airaid tube that goes from the throttle body to the actual air filter box itself. What does this hat actually do besides take up space and more then likely constrict air movement? What was the purpose to install it in our trucks? Thanks for the answers...

It keeps the air intake quiet. They call it a resonator.

your right on the money hear ..the hemi hat is the biggest restriction our engins have. you take it off you will no it, it will sound better and you will get better air movement in the engin . aslong as you have a CAI that will hook to the TB

Yep, it's a resonator. It's to keep the sound of the EGR opening and closing from driving you batty. Personally, I'd rather be batty and have performance!!!

Yeah restrictions always suck, I would agree with hammer on this. My intake will be connecting directly so I have this (and I'm gonna find a way or part to do this LMAO)

Resonator so that you don't hear the egr. It also does a great job of restricting the air flow into the tb.

I was looking at the Volant CAI. I called their tech support and they informed me that with their setup, you must use the Hemi hat or it will loose 11 lbs of torque. I posted this in another thread today. The only one that they make that goes straight to the tb is for the 4.7. So if I were not going to get the Volant and wanted one to go straight to the TB, which CAI gives me the most bang for the buck?
