'03 Transmission Issue Very Wierd
I have a 2003 1500 4x4, 5.7 hemi with auto transmission. 82,XXX miles and bone stock as far as I know.
Drove it yesterday and it was perfect as always.
Got in this morning and backed out the driveway, no problem.
Shifted into drive and was very doggy, like it was starting out in 2nd gear.
Check engine light came on.
Got onto the highway and wouldn't shift into overdrive, ran between 2500-2700 rpms at 55-60 mph.
Fluid is full and has no smell or leaks.
Drives very well in 2nd and 3rd gears, but no overdrive and doesn't seem to be downshifting all the way.
Motor runs very smooth and truck drives very smooth once you get it moving.
4-wheel drive works with no issues.
Am taking it into the shop tomorrow to have them check things out, but would REALLY appreciate any ideas/thoughts anyone could offer before I get there. Engines, suspension, exhaust etc... I am all good with, but i have VERY LITTLE experience with transmissions.
Thanks in advance for any and all replies- if more info is needed I will keep an eye on this thread and respond ASAP!

It would really help if we knew what the CEL code was. I'd tell you to go have it pulled and get back to us, but if you are bringing it to a shop, they'll pull it anyway.
Without knowing the specific code, we would only be guessing.
But it could be as simple as a failed sensor or a dirty/clogged filter inside the transmission.

Hey guys!
Thanks for the replies so far. I DID think about stopping to have the code pulled, but figured the shop would do that anyway-lol.
I also did try (for the heck of it) disconnecting the battery thinking it might clear out the error code but it, of course, did not...
Then got thinking about the check engine light, and it did come on one time a month or so ago but went off the same day by itself.
All this is making think (however wishfully) that it's something goofy with a sensor/computer issue and the tranny isn't getting good info from the computer.
Any more thoughts would surely be appreciated, and I will post back with the diagnosis from the shop.

Thanks for that- I didn't realize that would work! The error code is P0700, that was the only one listed in the output. Any idea what that one means? I am starting a search also!
Thanks!
EDIT- P0700 Transmission Control System Malfunction
Not sure what exactly that one means lol! I can already tell it's malfunctioning!! Off to more googling, and will keep checking to see if anyone has any more ideas!

Your P0700 code needs to be addressed right away. This signifies a problem with the solenoid pack, which is an external part that can be fixed for around $200 if you do it yourself, $300 if you take it somewhere. But a bad solenoid pack can mess up the whole tranny resulting in a total rebuild, which runs anywhere from $1200 to $2000 depending on where you go.
This was from a 2003 Durango. This was the problem that fixed it, I hope yours is alot cheaper...

From what I am able to read on here and google, that P0700 is a generic code from the TCM telling the Check Engine light to turn on, and that a tranny-capable scanner is required to pull the code(s) from the TCM. So we will see what the shop says in the morning. I will keep you posted, and thanks to all who replied.
p.s.- cross your fingers for me that it's a cheap fix- I have been laid off for 3 months with no sign of going back to work...
