Getting the trans flushed, confused on fluid
I am getting my transmission flushed next week. I finally found a shop that does a full flush with a pump inlet machine, NOT a cooler line machine. I have been looking around on here, and am sooo confused on what kind of fluid I should run, Royal Purple max-atf, amsoil, mobil 1, mopar atf+4, or something else? I am sure the shop has some cheap bulk stuff, and I am not sure I want that.
I just want to run the right stuff because I know mopar transmissions are picky...
Thanks

What's so confusing about different brands? They all do the same thing, but have slightly different base stocks and additive packages.
If I was you I would use Amsoil synthetic ATF. You'll need about 15 quarts if you're dropping the pan and doing a complete flush.

I just talked to the guy, he said they put Mopar 7176 fluid in. Does this sound like the right OEM stuff? I thought it was 9???.
Joel- this stuff IS confusing, go to the search and type in transmission fluid and see all the different opinions you get, some say no synthetic, some say yes synthetic, some say royal purple is made more for race applications, some swear by it. Some say amsoil doesnt meet the specs of mopar transmissions... see, its confusing. You obviously know transmissions/fluid better than me.
thanks

I thought the stuff they put in your tranny ATF 4 is synthetic. When I had mine done they put in mopar ATF 4 which said full synthetic. I could be wrong, I would have put in royal purple if the mopar fluid wasnt fully synthetic. Man, I thought I shoulda double checked.
I plan on switching my tranny and differential to RP at 30k b/c I have read that it gives cooler operating temps and better mpg. From everything I hear RP is great stuff, but I have yet to begin the switch to it.
when i did my trans flush my mechanic put in a call and said that the mopar fluid is synthetic, i told him i would buy the amsoil atf 4 fluid and he said id be better off keeping with the recommended fluid. either way after the servicing the trans the shifting was much better. the way i look at it, no matter what you flush it with its going to be better then the used fluid that was in there.
+1 on that. But just to add to this, I use RP max ATF. In fact I have RP in everything, on my truck, that I can put it in cept for the radiator.

Either MOPAR ATF +4 or equivalent will work. It is a synthetic fluid so make sure that this place you take it to is putting that in and not something else. Some of these places will put an ATF +3 in with an additive to try to bring up to the specs of an ATF +4. Personally, I don't go for that.
I did a little research, and it seems like the 7176 (atf+3) is the same as the 9602 (atf+4) but it breaks down faster, since it is an older formula. The 9602 was made to last 100,000 miles, while the 7176 only lasts about 30,000 miles. The 9602 is also better for colder weather, and Chrysler recommends that 9602 (atf+4) be put into all of their newer transmissions.
It looks like the 9602 is the way to go, but if he cant/wont put that in, I will put in the 7176.
I agree with v scapes, whatever I put in there will be better than what is in there now. I am pretty sure it has 7176 in it now.
Heres where I got the info if anyone wants to check it out:
