It is a mechanical valve that is activated by a switch. You keep it closed and the exhaust travels through your system as normal. When you open it, the exhaust exits through the valve (typically before the muffler) rather than traveling through the muffler.

How do you pass PA state inspection with one? I've wanted one for my truck but this always held me back ( read point c. )

The place I go for inspections is not that strict. Plus the owner likes my truck so he doesn't give me a hard time as long as the stuff I do is not a safety hazard.

Gotcha... yeah I try to stay legal with everything I do just incase. Don't need to get pulled over someday for being too loud, then have him check the truck and see the cutout and get double screwed. Mine is as legally loud as I can get it... and I guess that will have to do lol. Headers --> highflow cat --> super 44 turned down before rear axle. Only thing I might go illegal on is tint this summer.

Tint it! Tint it!
The trick I found is to go with the medium % tint (at your local auto store), they usually stock 3 different levels of dark. tint the front ones and tint the back - OVER THE FACTORY TINT.

This will give the back window and back doors a slightly darker look from the outside yet won't impair your night time driving ability. The lighter tint on the front will actually look darker from the outside because overall the cab is getting less light on the majority of the windows. It's an optical illusion that makes the front look like maybe it isn't that tinted.

Enough for the passing eye of the law.

Buy a good quality also the cheap low end stuff is very thin and wrinkles easy, plus is harder to work with.
