That's an indication it needs friction modifier. My Jeep GC started doing it, and over only about a months time got progressively louder/worse, changed the lube, added a bottle of modifier and within the first 3 miles the chatter went bye-bye...

Not exactly the way all lsd's work is if one tire has very little traction ( ice will give much much less traction then wet grass ) only that tire will spin. I had the sorta same problem i was wondering about mine and did some research and no lsd that i know of will spin both tires if one tires has very little traction.

I hate reading this threads about the crappy stock LSD. I want to get a Detroit or Auburn, but just have no money... I am really hoping this thing does not explode on me as has been forementioned.

I dont think they are really that bad to be honest. I asked the guy at a 4x4 shop i go to and he's never had anyone come in with that problem. I mean im sure it happens but i dont think its nearly as common as is being suggested. IMO i think it comes from lack or maintence, to big of tires, and towing to much. But this is all just my opinion im sure a few ppl on here will probably say im crazy for thinking they arent that bad.

there was a poll on another forum a while back and last I checked it about 35% of all those with '03s and stock LSD had it fail at least once, and about 25% of all those with 04 & 05s had the issue. I've not seen the data on newer models, I'll have to look around and see if I can find it again...

Yeah, if you find that info post it here. I don't know if the newer models are either not failing due to lower mileage or has the problem been resolved? I thought I heard something like they beefed up the c clips so they won't fail. But nonetheless, there should have been a TSB for the issue a long time ago...

cheapbeater asked this and im curious as well. is it just smarter to replace the lsd with a better aftermarket one, then being worried about the stock one falling apart.

It's only on the loose material. on pavement, it doesn't chirp or anything.

If the clutches are good, it will pull with the tire on dry pavement and the one on ice will also spin at the same rate as the tire on pavement. If it doesn't, the clutches are slipping and the unit is not working.
This is at light throttle, if you floor it while one is on ice, it will slip the clutches.
