Changing my diff fluid today? To pull or not to pull retaining clips out???
This has nothing to do with the clips. Silver fluid just means the oil is overdue. Diff's are suppose to be a silvery brown when you first change the fluid because all the bearings and the gears need to break in. There's nop filter so the particles just get recirculated.
Again, silver has NOTHING to do with the clips....Abarmy.

Dirty, I can understand some metal (a little) in the oil from break-in but the oil should still look like oil and not ''liquid silver''. The circulation of all those metal particles is what the problem is in the long run. Think of it as liquid sandblasting. Keep in mind on mine I said I was missing two clips completely, one was broken off with only the 'w' showing and the other was wedged between the pass side bearing cap. So with those clips "missing" and obviously being ground up in the gears, that is where all my silver metal particles came from. I tried to take some pics and a vid of my oil but my cam wont focus in enough so I will use my cam at work tomorrow and post back.
Thanks for this post.
You know..............I was that pissed at the state of my diff, I couldn't even think about videoing or taking pics of the oil.
It was only MUCH later, when I had "barked at the moon" so to speak........English for shouting obscenities and Anglo Saxon................that I could even take a pic and record my clips for posterity and to help others on these forums.
I have a friend over here in the UK, that has a R/C Rumble Bee with only 21k miles or so on it, with this very problem.
You can ROMP on Fords and Chevy's and not have this happen????
21K isn't even broken in?????
It TOTALLY STINKS!!!
I hope some Dodge guy who is "in the know" reads this?
We are SICK of this problem.......do a recall ya' cheap skates, before someone is killed!

Clips styaed in as i didn't pull the cover, so in reality i don't evenknow if they are still intact. I have no doubt otherwise. i am very familiar with my vehices.
At any rate, most rear diff changes that go for a while do have a silvery tone to them. There is a lot more metal than one would think that comes out of a healthy differential. The particles are very minuscule though. Not big chunks as you may have with broken clips.

I have NEVER changed my diff fluid with the "lazy" method of sucking out the old and pouring in the new.
I always use the oil change time as a perfect opportunity to inspect the gears and LSD!!!

First time i have ever done such a thing. I am willing to bet there are only 2 or 3 guys out of the whole bunch that have changed their diff fluid before 5kmi. Most wait until 30kmi even for the first time. When i get to 15kmi, i will pull the cover off and inspect.
Laff out load, you silly sod....!! Brought that one on yourself.........
I know where your coming from though. You'd think it was ok at 5k but I thought that too at 21k and mine are shot.
Best check them Dirtydog. Dont just presume.. You might trip and fall.
