Default Service Work

Tomorrow I'm bringing my truck back to the dealership I bought my truck from. It came with a 2 month/2,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty, so I will utilize it. I noticed that when I go over bumps, it makes a clunking sound coming from the driver side tire; I'm assuming it's a bad ball joint. Also, when I bought the truck, it came with the service records that showed what they fixed before selling it. One of the items they replaced was the steering rack. I can tell it still has some kind of issue. When going around tight corners, the steering wheel kind of pulsates back and forth with an unusual pressure. I know my father's van has some steering issues, and his van does a similar thing.

So for now, I have them looking at the popping noise from the front, and the steering wheel. Truck also sounds like it may have some kind of exhaust leak coming from the fender wells near the engine, but I can't tell if it's just a sound the truck makes. Other than this, I love this truck. It has so much power, and cruises effortlessly. I took it up north with my dad yesterday and he was just so impressed with how smooth it drove down the highway at 80mph

Rack, ball joint as well as tie rods are known to have issues. Make them fix it all and document it well, as the short warranty will be over soon. This way you can make them stay on any issues till they are fixed to your satisfaction...

Sounds good, thanks Hammer. I was a little surprised the steering rack was replaced at such low mileage. Our family owns a ford windstar with 197,000 miles, and it started having leaking issues around 175,000 miles, so I assumed it was more of a high mileage problem. I'll let you know how it all goes.

Have them check the tie-rods again, even though all that stuff should have been checked before they sold it to you.

Never assume anything with Dodge! I am on my third power steering rack at 35,000 miles.

They have always been covered under warranty luckily.

Each time my power steering rack went, I had the issue you are describing. For example, if I was getting off a highway and taking a LONG slow and steady turn off a "C" shaped offramp, my steering wheel would go a little loose, then tighten up, or be normal then go a little loose, causing me to slightly oversteer until I corrected myself.

Dodge uses remanufactured Power steering racks when they replace them under warranty (from what I hear, which doesnt really mean anything)

Each time I had the rack replaced I always confirmed, by taking a look myself that they actually replaced the entire rack, and didnt just do a repair.

My last two racks were leaking at the inner tie rod on one of the sides. It's been a real PITA.

My first rack went like 27,000 miles (the original) and my second rack lasted 6,000 miles! I WAS PISSED! LOL. I never replaced one, in ANY of my vehicles before, and we have had some high mileage cars and trucks.

Now I am on #3. So far so good. I check it constantly.

I swear these trucks blow through front end parts like ball joints like its nobodies business. I see you have an 05, and you said you have low mileage. Theres no excuse ya know?

Good Luck!

That's good to know, because I have a degree in wildlife biology and kinda felt embarrassed not knowing what the hell a "squaril" is...
