I have the torsion bar style, which not only lowers the tailgate, but makes it a one finger excersise to raise it.
This makes it very useful for my wife and the kids.
Plus, no moving parts to wear out.
Sorry, but I can't remember for the life of me who makes it or what it's called???
I'll try and post up later what it is.
Al.
Do you have a picture of it. I have one but have not installed it because, well, i'm just to lazzy and you have to remove the gate to install.

Here is the install:

I dont think you could just let it drop with just that torsion bar in there correct? It still would kind of slam down? I think the combo of the two products would be best.

I have the EZ down ram style, it lets you forget about those stupid cheap cable that can snap at anytime from being the tailgate being dropped hard over and over accidentally. Slows it down to a nice stop. Doesn't help with the lift but these 09 tailgates have to be the thinest lightest tailgate I have ever seen.

This one actually claims to help both in lifting and dropping? Think it really does?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/02-08...1%7C240%3A1318

Update: I emailed this ebay seller and he said it is only for lowering, not raising.

Guess both products would be the best for raise and lower

Ok, I bought the Mopar one from Amazon for $45, it looks like a bolt on/no-drill option. I've had the wife nearly drop the tailgate not expecting it to be that heavy. Fedex says it will be here wednesday. If it's really that easy, I'll snap some pictures and let you know!
