Default what axle?

What axle does the Ram 1500 have, D44 or 60? I measured the axle, the tubes are in the area of 3.5" in diameter, the nearest i could find was 3.625 on the 44, 60, and 70, but i doubt it would have a 70, so either 44 or 60. 60 I'd assume?

And what series is that yoke?! between the aluminum 4.5"ish driveshaft and I'm guessing 1410 joints, how are we, the public, supposed to break something from the tranny back?

BTW, little update- the truck has 5200 miles, another 1000 gonna be added with a trip to Port Aurthur (sp?) tomorrow through friday.

Default RE: what axle?

According to Dodge's website the current 1500 gets a Chrysler 9.25" rear axle. The SRT-10 gets a Dana M60 HD, the 2500 gets an AAM 1050, and the 3500 gets an AAM 1150

here's a page with little drawings of common axles (not AAM though)

You can also look at the sticker in the glove box. It will state the axle size and ratio. In mine it says Corporate 9.25 3.55 ratio. Correct me if I'm wrong but it is my understanding that the 4x4 have a Dana front axle.

Good question they may be different. I'll have to check. I just noticed the tag on the rear axle the other day, but haven't checked the front.

chrysler corp 9.25"?

Whatever happened to Dana Corp? I thought they were always on DC vehicles (how one wound up on our GMC C3500 is unknown to me).

From what I found online for 2004 1500s, the rear is Chry Corp 9.25 and the front is Chry Corp 8 IFS. The last year for the DANA 44 in the front was 2001 for the 1500s.

Dana has been used by all of the Big 3 at different times. Why DC switched to AAM instead is beyond me - perhaps to cut down on the number of people swapping in aftermarket limited slips, changing pinion ratios, etc. But whatever the reason all it did was make Dodge less appealing for the next several years until there's more of an aftermarket for the AAM axles.
