Default Rear Differential

So my rear differential is going out on my 03 ram 1500 4X4. its got the hemi with a 3.92 rear end. anyone have suggestions on where i can buy the parts to change it? and is it real difficult to change? Because the dealer wants $1500 to do it and that's more than i want to pay

how is it "going out"? i know that if you had the factory lsd, you have a very likely chance of it blowing up on you.

as far as doing it yourself.... prolly not. ring and pinion and all that stuff is a very specialized skill, and thats why no matter where you go for diff work, they will charge you

i'm sorry to say, this one is going to cost you. but 1500 for a single diff is quite high. for that much you can have someone do all new gearing with a detroit truc limited slip in a 4x4. should be half that if you have a 4x2, less without the trutrac.

if it's gonna be apart, might as well upgrade.....Auburn and Detroit both make excellent LSD componets....the auburn is gonna be about $100 less or so....you won't have the tools to do the gears yourself....need a special tool that goes in the axle tubes to back off the adjusters....also need to have a dial indicator so you can measure your ring gear backlash...having dummy bearings to get the correct thickness pinion gear shim is highly recommened (specially if re-gearing)

all in all....take it to a shop and have them do it....$1500 is rediculous just for the rear, should be around $700-800 or so....
