Default AMSOIL 75W-140 + Rear Diff Question

Hello everyone,

I just recently replaced the rear diff fluid and was curious if I needed to add the friction lock in it for the limited slip. I read on the Amsoil bottle that it was made for limited slips and had something like the friction lock in it. Is that the same as the other stuff? Or should I put the friction lock in it?

Thanks in advance,
Jeremy

If you read the product sheet for 75w-140 I believe it says to add slip lock.

yeah I was kinda wondering the same thing since auto zone didnt have the royal purple kind so I picked up mobil one. Says its meant for LSD but not too sure if it's still ok to run without the additive.

Well I went home and read the sheet and bottle again and then checked the information on the amsoil website and it says if you experience any gear whining or other problem add in the slip lock. I've been running it without for about 500 miles and it seems to be running fine. Much better than before anyways.

Royal Purple and Amsoil as well as the newer Mobil 1 LT bottles ALL HAVE Limited slip additive already. If you want to add more, go ahead. Only thing is the additive isn't the best for seals so too little is better than too much for that reason.

i would only add some if you experience chatter. otherwise leave it alone.

yep, agree with the 'dog on this one too.

If it has the friction modifier in it, don't arbitrarily add any. But if you get any chatter or binding around turns, put some in. I'd start with half the four ounce bottle and work up from there...

Well said! I've used Royal Purple for four years WITHOUT the additive and no problems - good explaination for reason to limit additive use***

From Mobile1 web site...guess I better pickup another bottle and return my additive before I do the change this weekend...

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube 75W-140 LS contains special friction modifiers designed for limited slip-type differentials. In most applications, the addition of special LS (limited slip) additives is not required. For axles requiring the highest level of limited-slip performance, OEM specific LS additives can be added to this fluid.
