c clip failure
Yesterday i changed the oil on my rear diferential and found my differential very dirty.
The magnet was completly covered in "mud" like substance and the oil changed from a red to a silvery colour. Amongst the debris the biggest part i found was part of a c-clip.
My waranty has already expired(in Costa Rica only 2 years 50000 km) and i,m at 39000km and 3 years. The dealer is trying to find out if the factory will approve a repair under waranty but i do not feel very confident about that knowing the position of crysler at this moment.
So basically i,m thinking about having to pay for everything myself.
If or when i have to pay for everything myself it could be a good opertunity to go for 4.56 gears which i feel would be helpfull in the hilly area where i live.(the dodge ram 1500 4.7) just isn,t agile enough for these kind of roads.
I,m not sure what kind of gears i have, because there are no markings on the axle/differential or any place, not even a sticker in the glovecompartment.
I do have the towing package(or at least the towing switch) which means they would be 3.92 correct? If i go for other gears do i have to do something in the front diff as well or is the rear diff sufficient. (i seldom use 4x4)
Any aftermarket differential you would recomend and Why?
Open to any suggestions and or comments on replacing this diff by myself. I,m defenetely not an expert on cars, not at all , but i do have 16 years experience working on aircrafts.
So i,m not without mecanic skills.
In my garage i have some fotos about the items i found and one of the diff open.

There's lots of info if you do a search.
Real quick.
It's not the c-clips. It's the Clutch Pack retaining Clips that are a common problem with the stock LSD. Get yourself a Detroit Trutrac.
Differential fluid is Light Brown in color, not red. 75w-140 Synthetic is what should be in there.

well one thing is for sure, if you change gears you will have to change front and rear diffs to the same gearing. sorry to hear about your c-failure though. From what I have heard aroung here; detroit track/loc seems to be a popular option. You'll have to wait for someone else to chime in here to know some brands though; as I don't.

I just filled it with ATF-4 fluid. I,d better change it again soon.
Any comments on why the Detroit Trutrac??

Ditto, you WILL have to change the gears up front too or the first time you engage 4wd you will be in for some excitement!
Depends on which one falls off. Could grind down the housing bearing surfaces, get caught up in the ring/pinion and tear some sh*t up. metal shavings could get into bearing surfaces. or if your lucky, they will be in whole at the bottom of the belly.
