what I don't get is if everyone runs 87 octane, why not get a superchips programmer and set it to 87 octane tune?

Wouldn't that solve this issue?

Keep in mind that as an engine accumulates miles, it sometime requires a higher fuel octane, depending on the buildup of carbon in the combustion chamber. The carbon in the combustion chamber increases the compression ratio of the engine.
If the Hemi is on the edge with 87 octane when new, 87 octane may cause significant spark knock when the engine has 50K, 100K, etc.

I think the OP meant 'ported tb' on the last page

I hope to goodness whoever owned my D before us used 89, 'cause my dumba$$ sure hasn't.... Time to change that, asap.

135,000 miles on my 04 hemi, never used anything other than mobil 1 full synthetic oil and never ran anything less than 89, but after getting a tuner, I only run 92 now. Never had a single engine problem. It's never stalled, always started on first crank, and other than the EGR valve, never had the check engine light come on. So, compared to most modern engines, I'd say it's not junk.

After reading this post. I wonder about the gasoline quality at some stations. Meaning if you buy 91 or 89 is it actually that. If your pumping 87 and lets say it's 86. Then add carbon creep (carbon build up on top of piston) into the equation. Heat in the combustion chamber would be getting pretty extreme. Again just a thought. I have no idea if this could be happening.
I run 89 in my 4.7 with superchip at the 87 setting.
