im painting mine black aswell...
my BF did it to his car and he says dont clear coat them..
1 good coat of primer (dont use cheap primer)
and 2 coats of either Krylon low gloss or rustoleum low gloss black
his look amazing

ok so heres where I am at!!!!
lights pulled out with rubber romoved and oven pre heating
llens and insert pulled apart after oven bake @ 225 for 7 mins
taped off and bondoed
again
sanded bondo
lens painted eyelids
more to come the inserts are in the freezer and im taking a greenery break

225 degrees for 7 mins melted on of my lenses and it made it all melted and white at the top so i sanded it back to normal and painted over the spot decided to make me a vador line... hopefully it will look good installed... i went to that first little line in the headlight
