Default Newb question about making my truck sound louder...

Hello, ok i've never had a Dodge Truck...always had cars lol. I'm a newb when it comes to this but here goes.

Pretty much my truck is a 5.7 dodge ram 1500 05. I want it though to sound a little more tough. Not too loud though, just a little louder. It has one pipe or whatever you'd call it on the rear right side exhuast..in original condition.

So what do you recommend me doing if i take it to a muffler shop or what should i get or do to make it sound a little more tough? Will it ruin my truck if i add something to the muffler?

Thanks!

Step one: chop the stock muffler off
Step two: choose a replacement muffler
Step three: weld new muffler in place and drive it like you stole it.

Advice on step 2: depending on just how loud you want it, the best thing to do is search youtube for exhaust videos. For a good medium noise, V8 tone, you've got Magnaflows, Aeroturbine, and the Flowmaster 50 series. For more serious noise, you've got the flowmaster 40 series and super 44, cherry bombs (vortex or extreme), several other brands and of course glass packs. You'll here all kinds of opinions on mufflers, what offers the best performance, or best noise, but really, go to youtube and find a sound you like. I've got a Cherry Bomb Extreme, it's a single chamber muffler, and its loud, doesn't drone, and I highly recommend them to anyone who wants their engine to scream when you put your foot down. Chambered mufflers like flowmasters tend to drone at cruising speeds, and most of the members here love Magnaflows.

However, there are a few points most here agree on: the best size for a single pipe is 3" diameter through and through. The best size for a dual outlet is 3" in and 2.25" out. 2.5" out is ok, but dual 3" outs you loose to much velocity and it will hurt performance.

The other thing I can't stress enough is for a cat-back exhaust job, got to a local shop with a good rep, bring in the muffler you want, and let them too the rest. Even kit I've seen is twice the cost of just getting the local shop to do it.

I'm not really sure how much chopping is involved, isn't the stock muffler clamped on? Magnaflow is a good recommendation and I would say go w/ a 18" one at least, 14" is what I have on a v6 and it's a bit too loud. You can go dual in dual out, dual in single out and have the y-pipe cut out, or single in single out and leave the y-pipe alone for now.

I think it is clamped on, but welding the new one in is the way to go.

Yea definitely, I took mine to a local shop and had them cut out the factory y-pipe and put on a dual in single out magnaflow.

Im surprised no one said a E-cutout because it is something you can control. You can have it loud when you want and quiet when you want.

You want it loud??? Throw on an E-Cutout and an intake to remove the hemi hat and it will be loud and aggressive sounding... when you want it to be...
