Default Gas mileage question

I recently bought a 2006 3.7L V6 Dodge Ram 1500 long bed with the towing package. This past week I calculated the gas mileage I got around town with a little highway use and it was around 11.5 miles/gallon (I wasn't hauling anything but myself).

This strikes me as surprisingly low, although I knew gas mileage on the vehicle wouldn't be great. Does this sound accurate to anyone out there? The sticker said 16 city 21 highway and right now I'm nowhere NEAR close. I know the EPA estimates are sometimes laughable, but this laughable? Someone guide me here.

It really depends on how you drive and is your Quad or Single, because you got to remember you have a V6 in a huge truck with lots of weight... I usually let my truck rolll a lot and gradually press the gas pedal...

Sorry for leaving some info out. Yeah its a single cab. I always thought it was a big truck for a V6. My friend's truck is a cummins diesel v8 and gets better gas mileage than I do. ha.

Yea my best advice is just to try to use the weight in your advantage... Also dont just hit the gas but gradually press the gas will help... Just try different ways to drive... Trust me I have a Hemi and Im probably wasting the same amount.... I just try to use the weight to my advantage... Just learn whats best for you and trust the EPA MPG lies ALOT to us

Keep in mind if you leave it setting idle your MPGs suck. Also the tire pressure and 100% fuel v/s 90/10 gas/ethanol mix.

Underpowering a vehicle is worse than overpowering one, the 5.7L Hemi often yields better mileage than the 4.7 and even the 3.7 V6 in a full size pickup...

Not really. In 2006 the EPA changed it's terrible unrealists standards to much more practical standards. This includes running the vehicles on the inhouse dyno with the A/C on as well as a true headwind and with stops & starts compared to the 80's and 90's where they would just slap a vehicle on an in house dyno and run the vehicle at 30mph to get mileage.
EPA estimates are very close these days so most people shouldn't fall too far from their numbers but there are always variances based upon driving style.
For example. My Exploder I got. it's underpowered and I'm always mashing the gas. i get 112-13mpg in that pig so far and I've ran through 6 tanks already. I get better mileage in my truck when I am towing!

What size wheels and tires are on the truck? Is everything still stock? It may only need a tune up and some fluid changes. Do you have maintenance records for the truck?
