For SERIOUS off-roading, besides the obvious like 4WD, Lift, etc. You really need light weight, a short wheelbase and favorable angles of approach and departure.
Even though I've owned a lifted 4x4 truck for most of the last 25 years, up until about the last 4 years I've always had a short wheel-based off road play toy. A CJ, a Wrangler and even an '89 Dodge Raider (2 door Mitsubishi Montero).
You'd be better off using your truck as a daily driver and using the cash you would build it up with to pick up a beater Jeep, Toyota, Nissan or even a Suzuki Samurai...

LOL what year truck is that?.I had an '82 4x4 with a 4" suspention lift with 31's,custom exhaust and center force clutch.I used to take that thing everywhere.the only problem i had with it was it had the little 22r motor and with the big tires and not doing the gears to compensate i eventually grenaded the motor.I was going to put a v8 in when i moved to texas but kids came after that and it had to go

Thanks for the opinions. I don't plan on doing anything vertical, or something that will twist ANY vehicle in half. I'm actually building it as a multipurpose vehicle. My friends all own 4wd Subaru's, and like to go mudding and get stuck. They SWEAR by them. You guys say that it's impractical and not worth it, and even say to get a new truck which in itself is even MORE impractical. I like it when people are honest with me and I value everyone's input, but people who say that it can't be done, or that it will totally suck are the very reason that I like doing it. My reasoning behind this whole thing is that the newer jeeps come with the 3.7 AND 4WD, so why can't I have the same setup? Secondly, V6 = less weight = less sinking, pressures, and stress on the frame, plus a better weight distribution. Anyways, I finally got to measure the jeep arms today. The dodge arms are about 14.5" on the inside, 19.5" on the outside, and 19.5" wide. The jeep arms are about 15.5" inside, 19.5" outside, and 14.5-15" wide. They probably will bolt up, but they are about 4.5-5" inches too short. The only other way that I can think of to make this work is to get the lift spindels, the rancho suspension kit, and custom fab up some shock mounts.
