Gotta Love Warranties
Well I have had a whine coming from the rear end for a while now after I had the 4.56's installed. It wasn't anything to noticable or horrible but now its getting a little annoying. It only whines at about 60mph, and when combined with the new exhaust it literally sounds like a damn train driving down the road.
So a quick call down to 4wheel parts and they will either fix it for free or replace it for free under the 3yr/36000 mile warranty I got on it. So if you are going to get major aftermarket work done to your vehicle, be sure to either get a warranty on the work OR get someone that will back up their work if its not something you can tackle on your own.

Its just annoying more than anything, last time I pulled the cover it had no shavings or large pieces of metal in it, it just had a whine to it. But that whine mixed with a loud exhaust sounds like a train, thats the best way to describe it, a train horn from a distance. And what really sucks is that traffic right now on my way home has only been moving at 60mph max for construction, everything above and belowe is fine though.
Yeah, Dog is right, I have the same thing with my 456s. It isnt loud and usually only if I MAKE it happen I know its there. I pulled my cover and changed oil after 1k and didnt have any real metal in the oil. Ill keep an eye on it though.
I'm getting the same whining between 65 and 75, but I have the stock 3.92's. It only whines when I'm on the gas. It has done it since day one, but is not very noticeable. I'm probably the only one who hears it, but after hearing your story I'm thinking mine is probably coming from the rear end. I thought it might be the exhuast, but I'm leaning toward the rear end. I have 17k miles on mine.

Glad to hear they are standing behind their work. I agree... If they shop can not afford to back up their work... you should look else where. Going to the lowest bidder in most cases will leave you stuck funding the repairs because they will blame the issue on the gears... 99% of gear issues are due to inproper installation.

Playing devils advocate, I have read many articles on the 4:56 install.
Many if not all, will after instalation or some point down the road, start to whine.
Again, many very experienced installers have tried in vain to reset the contact pattern and pinion depths etc etc etc. All to no avail.
It can either be on the drive or coast side or both.
Many just live with the wine. A reminder that you have the 4:56's installed lol.
Some have pondered the theory that the metal is different between stockers and the 4:56's. Some say as do many, that it's incorrect instalation.
The upshot is, no one exactly knows????
So people, don't be surprised when your shop/installer says they can't find anything wrong and they still whine after either a rebuild/replacement set fitted.
Again................just being devils advocate having no experience of this swap, but having read 50 + threads on this same subject from guys who are frustrated to hell about this.

I don't know Al, I don't have a hint of a whine and the local place I found and introduced Pyro to, the installer who did his gears said there should NEVER be a whine from a ring and pinion. Said that it's usually from improperly setting them, but can be from just a bad gear set. He told him if he heard ANY whine to bring it back, right away, so they can check them.
If I had a set that whined after paying what it costs to have gears done, you better believe I'd be on the place that did the work until I was satisfied.
Not to hurt the business of guys like Air Ram or Moe's, who offer very competitive prices on some very good parts, but on a gear job, I'd personally purchase the components from the place that does the install, even if it costs a little more. That way there is no finger pointing when you have a problem.
