chosing new tires
hello, we have a 2006 1500 long bed 4 door ram. the tires are stock and need to be replaced. My wife is having a baby in october and wed like to replace the tires before then, were basically looking for a safe tire for the bad weather we get here (snow, rain, ice etc) does anyone have any suggestions about what kind or brand, and perhaps a place that would be a good deal?
thanks
thanks
well i have the cooper zeon ltz's and i love mine an extremely gr8 ride
What do you use your truck for? Is it a 4x4 or 4x2? To help you choose the proper tire, we kinda need to know the intended use.
That said, the Zeons are rapidly gaining popularity, but I'd personally not call them an A/T tire, maybe a cross between an All Season Tire and an A/T. As such, it would be a solid choice for a pretty much street vehicle. Reports I've seen give it great dry pavement and very good wet pavement traction, good light snow and ice, but poor deep snow and off-road marks.
I just put a set of Nitto Terra Grapplers in my Grand Cherokee, very impressed over all. A pretty aggressive true A/T tread, excellent dry and wet pavement ratings, very good ratings in light snow and ice, and as good as any A/T in deep snow and mud.
You'll find you'll get better fuel economy with a less aggressive tire like the LTZs however, because there is a trade off for better traction.

i used to tell everyone how great my bridgestone dueler a/t revo's were. great traction, but TERRIBLE tread life.
my father has a set of michelins on his ford with more than 80,000 miles on them and still has a good 10k-20k before they will need replacing, granted they are expensive...
they will probably out last his turd, i mean ford..

Cheapest place on the web. Roughly $165/tire shipped to your door. Most places charge $15-20 per tire mounted/balanced. That's only another $80. Closest place near me wanted $1320 for the same tires. I saved $500 plus NO TAX!!! Tires take 2-3days to get to your door. For $185 mounted balanced out the door. That's a great price for the tire you get!!! It is the cheapest best tire out there. Sure there are better tires, but you will pay dearly!

I found them to be a VERY long wearing tire with excellent dry and wet pavement features, ok on light snow but terrible in the deeper stuff and mud. I pulled them and sold them with about 30k miles on them and a good 85%+ of tread left in favor of a set of Goodyear Wranglers.
The Goodyears sucked, took a ton of weight to balance, always had a vibration and ended up cupping like hell and had one belt separation, all in the first 15k miles. It was those Goodyears prompted me to get my first set of Mickey Thompson's, the now discontinued MTX's. Up until the set of Nitto Terra Grapplers I just put on my Grand Cherokee, I've never bought anything that didn't say Mickey Thompson/Dick Cepek since.
I really wanted the Mickey ATZs for the Jeep, but even getting a deal from my buddy with a tire shop, they were over $200 a tire. I got into the Nitto's for $590, mounted and balanced, before tax. I know that they are a smaller tire (31.5x10.5x17) but at $147.50 a tire mounted and balanced, just couldn't beat it!!!
