what makes that sweet "popping" (best word i can think of for it) exhaust sound during acceleration? is it cause they have no CAT or is it a certain combo of muffler & x-pipe? I DON'T KNOW AND IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS TRYING TO FIND THE RIGHT EXHAUST.. AHH??? i just paid off my truck and am wanting to dump some extra change into into it now!!!

Lack of backpressure + unburnt fuel in the exhaust + spark timing being retarded on deceleration, create backfiring or "popping". Having a manual trans helps too.

You used the word "they" when you asked about not having a cat or a certain combo so I assume this isnt your truck were talking about. I know a lot of the chevy truck guys around here for true straight piped meaning no cat, no resonator and no mufflers and they pop very loud.

i would think this would cause more "popping" with a manual when decelerating in a lower gear.

I've got a superchips, and a cherry bomb extreme, and I get the popping you are referring to. Still have the stock collectors and cats. It is friggin sweet, I love I that noise. Glasspacks may give you a bit more pop and crackle.

A cutout will do it everytime, unless you are talking about when its sitting idling, then you might be hearing an aftermarket cam
