The 08 4.7 is a different beast than older models. It's more fuel efficient, and a lot more powerful. It gets as good or better mileage than 08 and older hemi's, I believe the 09 Hemi's mileage is back over that of the 4.7. That said, with a 4x4, 14-15 mpgs is to be expected, and probably won't see much of an increase past doing everything that was told to me on this thread... City driving is a mileage killer, and if you're not almost 90% highway, then I wouldn't ever expect higher numbers than what you're seeing. It takes a lot of juice to get the the beast going from a dead stop.

Pleased to report that it appears my mileage is back to normal. Drove home from work after installing the EGR valve and back to work today. Overhead economy is reading 21.7 mpg's, which normally comes out to be around 18.5 at the pump. Truck is running great... Now it's time for another mod that has caught my fancy... Time to find a Taurus efan to install into my truck...

If you guys aren't throwing codes, I would try cleaning EGR valve first. Soak the entire bottom of the valve in carb cleaner or gas, keeping the top (electronics) dry, pull it out wipe it down, let it dry, move the valve mechanism up and down to make sure its fairly loose, and throw it back on the truck. The one that came off my truck was stuck open, I took it and spent a few hours cleaning it, and it's clean and seems like it would work again if I need it. I take my TB off every 20k to clean it, I think I'm going to start taking the EGR valve off as well and clean it the same time...

Ridinhigh: do a search around for egr valves, or "P0406". Depending on what date your truck was produced, if you swap the EGR, you may have to reflash your computer. They changed to design on the EGR valve mid 04, and requires your computer have the new setup....

You will have to let me know how that works for you... The more I hear about the “e fan” the more curious I become. Would like to know what effect it actually has, where you got it (when/if you do) and how you installed it…

The Taurus fan works great. It cools the engine without a problem on the low speed and eliminates the parasitic loss associated with the clutch fan. Getting one is pretty easy, you can get it at pretty much any junkyard for around $20 or from eBay for a little more. Install is straight forward, maybe two hours start to finish.
