Default Cam Recommendations?

So I tried searching the forum for anything on this but I couldn't find anything so here I am posting.

I plan on doing a cam in my truck when I put my headers on and am still undecided which one to use. I hear great things about the 6.1 cam but haven't seen any numbers... Then there are other cams that I've seen numbers and nobody has anything to say.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated

I have the hemi of course and am looking for low to mid rpm power gains.

I think the 260 is better than the 6.1.

The sidewinder is also good I hear.

But I am like you and in the inquiry and planning stage.

What are you going to do for tuning? Are you wanting to run it on a canned tune from SC or diablo or are you getting a custom tune for a more aggressive cam.

The cam I will be putting in as soon as I can afford it again will be the Spartan Cam from Inertia Motorsports.

i am in the planning stage also. inertia motorsports has a nice deal, if you buy one of their cams, they will custom tune to your setup if you use a predator. (you have to pay extra) it depends on how wild you want to go.i am going with the spartan or spartan max because i want the lumpy idle, but comp cams 268 fits the bill too.

The tunes from inertia have been delayed because of the back log of tunes being required or at least that was the case the last time I heard anything about it. Im going to take mine down and get it dyno tuned so it brings out the best results that it can and then have it loaded onto the diablo as a custom tune.

I wouldn't mind the spartan max but it require new performance heads and I dont have an extra 1500+ to get them too

Don't waste your time on the 6.1 cam. While it is cheap compared to the price of other cams, it is not going to give you the performance you are looking for.

When you get the cam installed are you planning on getting a custom tune to run the cam or are you going to use a canned tune from say SC or Diablo? The way you choose to tune will play a big part in deciding what cam will work in your situation.

^^^^Teach, could you provide info for both ways if your are aware of them? Then this thread will kill 2 birds with one stone.

Pre-2006 have it easy. 2006+ need to change out the lifters unless there is a cam grind that will allow the use of the mds lifters? If there is such a cam I would imagine the lift won't be that big so the numbers won't be as big????? I'm just thinking out loud...

All you have to do for 06+ is just disable the mds with a tuner. No need for a lifter swap.

260, sidewinder, etc.

But i thought i read somewhere that they cannot be used in higher degree cams? So all that is needed is a valve spring upgrade then?

I'm running a custom grind that is slightly more aggressive than a sidewinder. Just springs and an MDS disable.
