Default 2003 5.7 hemi problem

Recently my truck started smoking after it idles for an extended time, usually over 10 minutes or so. At red lights in town it does fine. However if it idles over 10 minutes or so, and you go to take off, it blows a big cloud of smoke that smells like burnt oil, and once it blows the cloud out it stops smoking. What could cause this problem? And how much would it cost to have it fixed? Thanks a lot. Forgot to add, truck has 125k

Sounds like ur valve seals are going, maybe valve seal guides also. Not a cheap fix. Is it blue smoke or black, or white

its definately not a sweet smell..smells like burnt oil..and when its time for an oil change the oil is usually a bit low, not low enough to add any, but just low enough that i notice it..and its never been low on coolant..

That's an old test for worn valve guides/seals I seem to remember from "back in the day".
Rev to about 2500-3000 rpms for about a minute.
Then let the engine tick over for about 5 mins.
Then rev back up to the 2500-3K rpm's.
If she smokes, that's the problem.
Another way to test this is, if you go down a looooong steep bank and your engine braking, then accelerate as you get to a close level stretch and watch your tail pipe.
It should be puffing smoke out.
There are better more certain tests, but this will point you in the right direction.
Hope this helps?
Al.
