i know its best to take the diff covers off but is it ok to do it this way too? my ram has the same rubber cap that the jeep in the video has.

that way would work. but i wouldnt recommend it. doesnt let you clean out the metal shavings, get it all the way cleaned out, or visually inspect the inside of the diff.

I agree thats the "cheat method" as the vid says but Dirty is right also. Id rather crack mine open also and check everything also. That way you know whats going on in there.

i saw online that my local parts store has a gasket instead of using that rtv stuff.which is better?

use both. put a light coat of rtv on the pan so the gasket can stick to it. then another light coat on the gasket. allow it to cure for a couple minutes, then stick it on, and torque to specs

Thats how I do mine...easy as heck, I didnt want to pop it off till after warranty ends in awhile

what r the torque specs for the ram? that royle purple stuff is like $20 for 1 bottle and i need like 2-2 1/2 bottles just for the rear

If you have the stock lsd........I would definately not suggest using that method, for the reasons mentioned above.
Inspection of the clutch pack retaining clips imho, is a must do if the stock lsd is fitted.

Yeah, we know about those CPRCs dont we?

And JOHNSN10, if you think RP @ $20 a bottle x 3 bottles is alot, try doing RP in your trans and doing a complete flush.
